Job posting: Youth Program Assistant

Status: Seasonal, June 24-Aug. 16, 2024, 28-32 hours/week

Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 9-4pm, a couple hours on Friday as needed

Reports to: Program Manager

Broad Scope and Function of Job:

The Program Assistant supports our out-of-school time (OST) community-based programs for K-5 youth. This position partners with the program manager to establish developmentally appropriate activities, build meaningful relationships with youth and their families, and attend to the academic and social/emotional outcomes of the program. A Program Assistant assigned to each of our two community-based sites:

Luxton Learners: Luxton Learners operates from Luxton Park in SE Minneapolis and serves a diverse group, including East African, African American, Indigenous, and mixed-race youth living in or nearGlendale Townhomes.

Mulberry Junction: Mulberry Junction operates from East Side’s main campus at 1700 Second St. NE in Minneapolis and serves a diverse group of youth and families from across NE Minneapolis.

Seasonal opportunity with potential for longer term employment. Currently hiring for two positions.

Major Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for the following functions:

Program Implementation (50%):

  • Assist Program Manager in the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of groups and activities for students during program hours. Activities focus on skill development in academics, social emotional learning, problem-solving, decision-making, personal agency and community engagement.

  • Plan and lead small-group enrichment and academic activities.

  • Provide supervision of youth throughout program time to ensure a safe and positive experience for all participants, using positive youth engagement and behavior management strategies as needed.

  • Assist with data collection and evaluation of programming.

Administrative (20%)

  • Enter data including registration information, program attendance and other outputs into our client database for regular assessment of program quality and continuous improvement.

  • Assist with managing Continuous Learning Plans and academic goals for youth, to be submitted to MPS Office of Extended Learning.

  • Create printed materials to support program enrollment (flyers, registration form, etc.).

  • Attend meetings and trainings, participate in program evaluation and continuous improvement.

Family and Community Engagement (10%):

  • Conduct youth outreach in the community to link youth and families with available resources.

  • Assist in planning and implementation of family education and engagement activities

  • Facilitate parental involvement through direct communication, volunteer participation, family/parent events, and input.

Staffing Support (5%):

  • Assist with coaching and development of volunteers, interns and contracted staff.

  • Actively participate in orientation and training to gain the necessary understanding to carry out Youth Department and program goals.

Other (5%):

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Manager.

Qualifications

Job Requirements and Qualifications: 

Education: 

  • Must have completed at least two years of post-secondary education. An associates or bachelors degree in child development, Human Services, Education, or related field preferred. 

Experience: 

  • Proficiency writing and speaking in Oromo, Somali, and/or Spanish, as well as the ability to translate into spoken and written English is preferred. 

  • Valid MN driver’s license and strong driving record required. 

  • Experience working with urban youth and families in a community-based setting. 

  • Experience tutoring youth with an emphasis on reading, STEM and social emotional learning.  

  • Experience running a group and understanding group dynamics and how to increase youth engagement. 

 

Compensation: $20 per hour
