The Atlantic Council seeks an inquisitive nonprofit development professional to help drive the due diligence and post-award reporting and compliance-focused work of an expanding fundraising operation supporting global policy programs. The Assistant Director is an integral member of the Development Operations team within the Office of Finance and Operations (OFO). The position focuses on activities related to managing the due diligence workflow and reviewing/fulfilling due diligence requests. Additionally, this position will work with the Development Operations, Finance and Grants, and applicable Programs and Centers to submit timely and compliant financial and narrative reports. They will be responsible for working with the Deputy Director, Compliance and Development Operations and the Associate Director, Contracts and Grants Compliance to roll out compliance-related trainings and processes related to grant/contract reporting.


A successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, communicate effectively, and enjoy the complexity of supporting a rapidly growing program. The candidate should preferably possess excellent writing and copyediting skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with grant writing. The position requires superb administrative and communication skills, understanding of grants and contracts, and data entry through professional experience and academic work.


This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters on a hybrid schedule. Pay is commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers starting at $55,000. Applications submitted by June 30, 2024, will be prioritized for consideration. 


Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Associate Director, Contract and Grants Compliance to support the grant reporting process with programs and centers to ensure grant deliverables have been fulfilled and monthly, quarterly, or annual narrative and financial reporting meets the requirements of the grant agreement in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for processing all checks made out to the Atlantic Council and its Programs and Centers.
  • Develop, write, and review due diligence reports on potential funders, to mitigate risk and ensure proper stewardship.
  • Own and manage the due diligence workflow and make necessary updates and changes to the workflow process.
  • Support the Deputy Director, Compliance and Development Operations to make necessary updates and changes to the Compliance SharePoint site.
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Director, Compliance and Development Operations and Associate Director, Contract and Grants Compliance as a thought partner in rolling out compliance-related trainings and program kick-offs.
  • Assist with the creation of the Annual Report by compiling the Honor Roll of Contributors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a relevant field required.
  • 2-3 years of experience working in the non-profit, government, and/or due diligence and  USG project management preferred (volunteer and paid experience applicable).
  • Experience using CRM platforms such as Salesforce to enter and update data as necessary.
  • Experience in grant/contract financial and narrative reporting; project management or coordination experience, preferred.
  • Excellent experience related to research and analysis; preferred experience with LexisNexis products (including Nexis Diligence, Nexis Dossier and/or Nexis Public Records).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills, including ability to identify, balance and rapidly shift priorities, as needed.
  • Ability to make sound judgments, assume responsibility, and work independently in a fluid environment with tight deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to manage upward to move assignments to completion in a timely and professional manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills appropriate for operating effectively in a multicultural, international team environment.
  • The ideal candidate will be a data-driven, detail-oriented, self-starter and a good problem solver.
  • Excellent computer skills using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint are required.
  • Experience in fields of international development and/or development operations preferred.
  • Experience working/living internationally preferred.
