Responsibilities include providing individualized and specialized nursing care to patients in the ambulatory surgery center in accordance with the physician’s orders, recognized nursing standards, legal aspects of current nurse practice within the state and the center’s policies and procedures. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics. Demonstrates initiative, insight and judgment in decision making process.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Participate as team member
- Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management
- Organize nursing activities efficiently and effectively
- Use equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care
- Confirm that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice
- Assist in managing inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in all areas
- Transport patients observing policies and procedures, safety requirements and patient needs
- Review patient’s medical record/needs to plan care with other health care team members
- Develop a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data
- Informs patient regarding routine care and procedures related to the ASC experience
- Review post-operative instructions, prescription, and appropriate follow-up care from the surgeon with patient and escort and documents in medical record
- Determine the patient/escort verbalizes understanding of instructions
- Prepare areas in the ASC according to the requirements of the patient/procedure to be performed
- Assemble and provide properly functioning equipment and supplies
- Anticipate needs of team members, CRNAs and surgeons
- Monitor compliance with principles of aseptic technique
- Assist with the identification and confirmation of operative procedures
- Provide continuity of patient care by communicating with team members and documenting accordingly
- Assist with proper and safe positioning of the patient
- Respond in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and surgeon
- Accurately comprehend and interpret verbal orders and directions
- Document patient care records accurately
- Accurately advise others responsible for the care of the patient regarding patient’s status
