Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is responsible for oversight and financial management of an annual budget of $15M. In this highly visible leadership role, the director will lead a team of accounting and payroll professionals, managing the agencies overall financial performance, program accounting, controls, and financial strategies.

 

Financial Management and Leadership

 

  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team and CEO; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep Senior Leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status. Partner with directors to plan for changes in government funding structures.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary.
  • Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors. Participates in monthly Finance Committee meeting.
  • Implement a robust financial management and reporting system; ensuring accurate financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
  • Provide leadership to Finance Department, ensuring a collaboration and transparency across business functions. Analyze operational issues and evaluate their impact on the financial exposure of the agency elevating any concerns to the CEO.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices, as needed.
  • Collaborates with Director of Fiscal Sponsorship to ensure effective delivery of fiscal sponsorship program and adherence to proper financial management. 
  • Oversee close the fiscal year, balance internal accounting program with independent audit and form 990
  • Maintains and evaluates insurances appropriate for the organization, including acquiring new lines of coverage when needed
  • Monitor and keep up to date internal controls and fraud prevention
  • Remain current on regulations, industry trends and practices and applicable financial reporting laws ensuring agency operates within full compliance of the law.
  • Provide oversight to accounting and payroll staff. Direct supervision of Accounting Manager.

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of managerial and supervisory experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting
  • Minimum of 2 years of HR management experience
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting or financial management; not-for-profit experience preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse populations
  • Teaching, training, group facilitation, and/or public speaking preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong aptitude for financial management and HR functions
  • Computer literacy, including word processing, desktop publishing and database software; superior proficiency with spreadsheets required
  • Excellent record-keeping abilities
  • Ability to provide leadership within a team context; willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Master’s degree in Public Administration, Finance, Business, or related field strongly preferred
  • CPA preferred.
