Job Description

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Recreation Director manages and coordinates the Recreation program.  This position requires a consistent on the field presence throughout the fall and spring seasons.  The candidate must have a passion for the grassroots level to ensure program success.


Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Planning:

  • Provide the leadership, vision, and philosophy for the MYS Recreation Program (fall, winter, futsal, and spring leagues).
  • Develop and implement methods to promote program growth, safety, member satisfaction and member retention through program participation and facility excellence.
  • Bi-annually evaluate the structure, rules, policies, and procedures for the MYS recreation program, making recommendations for improvements to better meet the needs of members and the community.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to grow and expand the MYS recreation program.
  • Oversee marketing and communication efforts to maximize enrollments and program participation.
  • Assist with and support all recreational activities, including pre and post season events, promotions, etc.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Rec Committee meetings, staff meetings and meetings scheduled with outside groups.
  • Maintain high recreation-to-travel membership conversion by working with coaches to help identify players that could play in travel soccer. Ensure parents are notified of the opportunity and provided information about the program.

Program Management:

  • Oversee operations of all MYS Recreation Programs.
  • Supervise, train and support assigned staff, e.g., Assistant Recreation Programs Director, SFL Administrator, Recreation Administrator, Programs Administrator (as necessary) and Recreation Coaching Staff.
  • Recruit recreation staff and refine the recreation technical structure, as necessary.
  • Conduct pre-season meetings with all recreation coaches.
  • Manage time effectively and balance the demands of the regular club schedule – practices, clinics, games & tournaments – with the managerial and strategic work required of the position.
  • Work closely with MYS management, technical and executive staff to facilitate the operation of quality soccer programs and recreation program scheduling needs.
  • Support applicable MYS management policies and processes including the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards, personnel policies, budgeting, etc.


  • Assist the recreation staff with daily customer service for all members.
  • The Recreation Director is expected to promptly address issues or concerns that are escalated from feedback, complaints or suggestions from players, parents, coaches, other members or interested parties within a 48 hour period.
  • Provide oversight of all recreation program contributions to social media and website content to the appropriate/designated MYS management staff. 
  • Work with Communications Director to create recreation program content for the Sweeper newsletter.
  • Ensure timely communication of all scheduling and updates to members.


Recreation Program Administration

Supervise and Coordinate:

  • The registration programs for all recreation programs in conjunction with MYS management staff.
  • The solicitation of volunteer coaches working in conjunction with MYS management staff to ensure compliance with SafeSport and VYSA policies/procedures.
  • The creation and assignment of practice and game schedules for all recreation programs.
  • Submitting the game schedule to the referee assignor ensuring that there is adequate referee coverage.
  • Oversight of all recreation program equipment and gear, including but not limited to, working with MYS’s approved gear vendor to order all recreational uniforms each season, providing all coaches gear to MYS’s vendor for distribution to coaches, maintaining equipment inventory, and re-ordering (with Executive Director) new equipment.



  • Provide and support education for youth soccer recreation coaches, including but not limited to, licensing requirements.
  • Participate in youth soccer activities including seminars, outreach programs, conventions, conferences, etc.



Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • A minimum US Soccer C license, a National Youth license or comparable foreign or United Soccer Coaches license/diploma.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of comparable coaching experience.
  • At the discretion of the MYS Technical Director and Executive Director, a combination of education and playing/coaching experience may be substituted for specific licensing and/or experience requirements.  Likewise, licensing requirements may be waived for a time period of one year if a coach is working to obtain licensure.
  • Sound oral and written communications skills necessary for interaction with members, volunteers, staff and the community at large. 
  • Maintain all MYS mandated certifications to include, but not limited to, First Aid and SafeSport Act certifications.
  • The ability to work independently and to manage activities and volunteers as required.
  • The ability to interact positively with members, parents and staff.
  • Must be proficient with registration databases, Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, etc.
  • Provide a minimum three-year commitment to the program.


Work Conditions

Extensive outdoor work year-round. Flexible work schedule including evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays for training, games, and meetings. Must provide your own transportation for games, training, tournaments, and to occasional meetings. Must provide your own communication devices (e.g., cell phone, laptop, iPad).



Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include healthcare pursuant to organizational policies, paid vacation, communication reimbursements, and 401K. Open to providing relocation assistance if applicants are not located in Greater Washington, DC area.
