Sweet Briar College is a liberal arts college for women of consequence, located in the foothills of Virginias Blue Ridge Mountains approximately 12 miles north of Lynchburg and 54 miles south of Charlottesville. Job Title: Academic Resource Center Subject Tutor

Classification: Class I

Reports To: Tony Ryals

Job Summary/Objective: The purpose of the ARC is to facilitate learning. We focus on the long-term and try to develop better students, not just better assignments by using a facilitative, non-evaluative approach. We do not do students homework for them or check for accuracy. Rather, we work alongside students to improve their own work and mastery of the subject matter. In cases of new classes, or new instructors for classes, ARC tutors also meet with faculty to align their approach with facultys. Tutors do not typically tutor in classes in which they are currently enrolled.

Position Type/Expected Work Hours: 0-8 hours per week, plus opportunity for additional hours when needed

Supervisory Responsibilities: none

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with students seeking help with one or more specific subjects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Flexible and collaborative approach.
  • Academically inclined.
  • Interest in the theory and practice of peer tutoring.
  • Ability to attend regular tutor meetings.
  • Ability to help promote the ARC and its mission through occasional classroom visits and scheduled events outside regular hours.
  • Adherence to the Sweet Briar College Honor Code.
  • At least 21 credit hours earned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in peer tutoring.
  • Coursework in the subject(s) taken at Sweet Briar.
