General Statement:

The Graphic Designer II supports the Fleet Science Center mission and visitor experience philosophy by interpreting internal clients needs and designing solutions with high visual impact that meet the project objectives. Working with the Brand Experience Team Lead, the Graphic Designer II creates ideas and concepts and delivers on a variety of products, electronic signage, exhibit and environmental displays, digital and print advertising, photography, logo designs and website design. The Graphic Designer IIs knowledge in advertising through social media, electronic signage and mobile and web design are used to maintain and promote our corporate branding.

In addition, the Graphic Designer II closely collaborates with volunteers and coworkers.

Reports to: Team Lead

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of position, including mental requirements of position:

  1. Manages print, digital and exhibit design projects, including defining budgets, planning the design concept, determining print materials and production options, coordinating with vendors, presenting designs to the client, making revisions based on client feedback and meeting the project timeline.

  1. Produces related reports as requested by the Team Lead.

  1. Maintains and organizes the photo directory and procedures.

  1. Continues to scale the Fleet brand template bank and procedures to improve efficiency and quality.

  1. Provides training to department interns and volunteers as needed.

  1. Reviews and collects old Fleet related signage and creates an action plan to update with new branding.

  1. Evaluates and updates Constant Contact newsletters. Maintains Constant Contact reports and updates, contact growth, contact categories and monthly opt-out numbers.

  1. Maintains a strong hierarchy, layout and typography skill set as well as graphic software and tools for Mac and PC systems. Makes recommendations for upgraded or new design software applications as necessary.

  1. Creates design and mock-ups for online ads.

  1. Maintains quality, organization and proper optimization for all digital platforms.

  1. Constantly improves and maintains knowledge of theory and balance of design.

  1. Responsible for web design and CMS updates under the direction of the Team Lead.

  1. Provides design recommendations and strategy based on goals and objectives. Presents design strategy, concepts and production options with key stakeholders in a professional and collaborate discussion. Able to take feedback and revise concepts to align marketing stratgey, design strategy and key stake holders needs.

  1. Creates photography shot sheets and video storyboards for marketing and promotional efforts. Videography and light video editing a plus but not necessary!

  1. Provides job status updates to clients, coworkers and supervisor. Schedules meetings, sets agendas and makes presentations related to projects.

  1. Meets multiple deadlines while ensuring high quality standards are being met.

  1. Works closely with the Team Leadto maintain and protect the Fleet Brand Guide.

  1. Responsible for being knowledgeable of safety and emergency plan manual procedures for both the department and the organization.

  1. Must attend all required employee training.

  1. Additional duties as assigned.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position: Tools and equipment used to perform this position: Extensive desktop publishing software using Macintosh personal computer, photographic equipment, large format printer, folding machine and cutting equipment.

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:

  • Must have 35 years experience as a graphic designer.

  • Must have previous experience managing project budgets, supply costs and labor costs.

  • Proven creativity in graphic design in digital, print and large-scale formats (exhibit design)

  • Proficient knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Experience with video production and video editing a plus!

  • Ability to interact, communicate and present ideas.

  • Worked with website managing tools such as Drupal or WordPress.

  • Experience with e-marketing tools such as Constant Contact or MailChimp.

  • Familiar with using electronic marketing templates to get results through marketing campaigns.

  • Flexible to change and work with adjusted deadlines.

  • Ability to type 40 wpm helpful.

  • Ability to perform mathematical operations as needed for position.

  • Knowledge of photography (conventional and digital) layout, color theory and balance of design necessary.

  • Must be self-motivated, organized and resourceful.

  • Extensive experience using Mac and PC required.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required.

  • Sample work and a strong portfolio is required.

Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position: Supervisor assigns priorities. Incumbent performs most duties without direct supervision.

Physical Requirements of this Position:

Medium Work: Position involves ability to frequently or constantly exert up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.
