The Principal Architect position resides in the R&D Wired Technologies organization at CableLabs. The successful candidate will be responsible for research and innovation of optical communication technologies for the cable industry, including ideation, designing, characterization, and prototyping advanced technologies for future optical access networks. The position requires working closely with cable operators and technology partners and participating in defining the next-generation optical technologies for the broadband access network ecosystem. The impact of the applicant’s work on consumer, enterprise, and wireless/mobile broadband is global and game changing.

This position requires a strong, adaptable, and innovative self-starter with Ph.D. level education and/or experience in optical fiber communication technologies. It requires direct experience in the development of digital signal processing algorithm in coherent optical transmission systems. The ideal candidate should have fundamental understanding of passive optical networks, DWDM transmission systems, photonic integrated components, and electronic circuits and be comfortable with complex physical layer simulation to evaluate optical system performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to coherent optical projects for next-generation passive optical networks:
  • Configure end-to-end optical links and conduct performance characterization of coherent optical burst receivers, which includes detailed experimental validation of the components and digital algorithms
  • Design and optimize digital signal processing algorithms for both continuous-mode and burst-mode coherent transceiver in access networks
  • Originate and innovate new technologies for the next-generation optical access network architectures and systems
  • Lead and contribute to innovation projects that optimize and enhance convergence of optical and wireless/mobile radio access networks
  • Ideate and develop low complexity coherent transceiver for access applications
  • Contribute to forward error correction encoding/decoding, modeling, simulation, data collection and digital signal processing for channel estimation
  • Lead and support proof of concept demonstrations, lab testing, and field trial testing
  • Collaborate with cable operators, optical technology vendors, and academic community
  • Interface with optical technology vendors to develop products based on next-generation PON specifications.
  • Explore and support co-development and co-innovation projects
  • Support academic partnerships, industry regulatory policy experts to execute and publish related research
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Hands-on experience with high-speed optical and electrical test, and measurement equipment control and data acquisition
  • Experience of free-space optics, fiber sensing, semiconductor lasers and opto-electronics
  • Understanding of fiber optic channel and digital communication theory
  • Expertise of optical coherent and direct detection systems, modeling, testing, debugging, and digital signal processing
  • In-depth understanIn-depth thinking and analysis ability to tackle complex problems and provide creative technical solutionsding of operation and functioning of MAC layers for point-to-multipoint topology
  • Knowledge in optical, cable and wireless access networks and the corresponding standards and specifications (DOCSIS, Wi-Fi, LTE, 5G, xPON)
  • Proficient in MATLAB or Python/C/C++ programing language and optical simulation tools

Required Experience:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics, or equivalent experience
    • PhD in similar field(s) is preferred
  • 8+ years of simulation and lab expertise in optical and wireless/mobile communication systems and networks
