About the Job

Design Researchers deeply understand the context of the user and client ecosystem to design products, services, experiences, and systems that respond to human needs.  As a Design Researcher you are primarily responsible for framing the problem a client is trying to solve, identifying the research methods and tools to generate insights to solve those problems, gathering observations, and then analyzing and synthesizing insights in ways that are actionable by designers, strategists, and innovation teams.


This position is for an office-based/hybrid candidate in the Philadelphia, PA office (you must easily be able to be on-site in Madison with short notice) but candidates who are within commuting distance to our offices in Boston, MA, Madison, WI, and San Francisco, CA will also be considered. Only highly qualified candidates with a proven track record of working remotely with cross-functional design and innovation teams will be considered for fully remote positions.


Job Responsibilities 

  • Design and lead primary (qualitative) research activities to understand user, influencer, and decision maker needs
  • Conduct secondary desk/trend research to find additional insight and context related to the user ecosystem
  • Design field materials, analysis tools and other related documents that support research and analysis efforts
  • Recruit and screen research participants using third parties and other methods
  • Conduct domestic and international field research
  • Analyze and synthesize qualitative and quantitative data to generate actionable insights and design strategies
  • Synthesize and sense-making with internal and client teams to advise them on how to design for the needs of their customers and users
  • Build compelling experiences and stories that immerse both client and internal teams in the insights, opportunities, and recommendations
  • Document the story of the project in a way that is engaging and actionable for both the client audience, and potential future design and engineering audiences
  • Lay the groundwork for successful brainstorming and ideation sessions with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, and/or users
  • Collaborate with clients, designers, engineers, prototyping specialists, and other members of Insights & Strategy team to support idea generation, brainstorming, and concept development
  • Deliver exceptional client experiences as measured by client feedback and long-term relationships
  • Lead cross-disciplinary project teams and ensure quality of deliverables while adhering to clients budgets and schedule
  • Travel domestically and internationally for field research (occasionally up to two weeks in field) and client meetings
  • Participate in other projects and support as needed
About You


  • Bachelor's or Master's in design, human computer interaction, anthropology, sociology, psychology, architecture, marketing, or other similar fields
  • 5+ years of professional experience in design research inspiring and supporting design, design/portfolio strategy, product management, new product development (physical, digital, and/or service), innovation, and/or startups
  • High proficiency with hands-on experience leading qualitative research projects from start to finish must have participant moderating experience.
  • Consulting and/or agency experience
  • Ability to travel regionally, nationally, and internationally (often for just a few days at a time or up to one week for field work; very rarely for up to two weeks at a time for international field work
  • Located and authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role at this time


Preferred Qualifications

  • You are an expert and seasoned practitioner of Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design methods and how they apply to new product, service and experience development
  • You have experience working in a healthcare-related field (e.g. medical device, pharma, hospital/provider)
  • You are highly proficiency in Adobe suite software (InDesign, Illustrator), including video
  • You are proficient in quantitative primary research methods
  • You are excited about the fuzzy front end and comfortable with ambiguity.
  • You can work independently with a high degree of autonomy and are able to clearly communicate both visually and verbally with key internal and external project stakeholders to keep them informed of your design needs, progress, and any potential obstacle
  • You are a conscientious, hard-working self-starter who takes initiative
  • You are a natural collaborator who knows when to include your project teammates and stakeholders in the design process and can effectively facilitate group activities, including in-person and remote work sessions and design review
  • You are a convincing presenter and engaging storyteller who is comfortable on stage in front of an audience of clients and peers, whether presenting design work or offering your expert opinion
  • You are motivated by change, and see the pandemic, social injustice, and our younger generations as meaningful opportunities to adapt how we design and collaborate, and what we deliver.
