Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region is searching for a talented and committed professional to serve as their Family Selection Specialist based out of the Charlotte office.  Primary responsibilities are working with applicants through all stages of Habitat’s Critical Home Repair (HCHR) & Homebuyer programs; from application submission through underwriting pre-approval.  Also serves as staff liaison to the Homeowner Selection Committee.

Job Description


Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):

  • Principal Accountabilities:

    • Coordinate the Family Selection process for the Critical Home Repair program to include overseeing application intake, processing applications by performing income calculations, credit and background checks, preparing application materials and sending program participant letters where appropriate.

    • Assist with coordination of the Family Selection process for the Homebuyer program as requested.  Including participating in recruitment activities, orientation, processing applications, and assisting applicants through the application process.

    • Oversee document collection and review process to include assisting with the recruiting process for critical home repair applicants and veterans including preparing recruitment materials, sourcing and recruiting candidates using databases, social media outlets, canvassing, print media, information hotline, phone and walk-in inquiries etc.

    • Work collaboratively with the Director of Family Selection in preparing files for final underwriting and approval as well as attending monthly Homeowner Selection meetings

    • Assist with coordination and facilitation of trainings, orientations, meetings, and other public speaking engagements as needed

    • Assist with the completion of monthly and quarterly reports related to department goals and metrics

    • Ensures compliance with Equal Housing regulations, and Fair & Accurate Credit Transactions Standards

  • Physical Requirements

    • Ability work in office environment as needed which requires ability to speak, hear, with the visual and manual dexterity to manage papers, reports, and typing

    • Must embody the capacity to maintain the following for several hours at a time: use of personal computer or similar technology, phone, sitting as required

    • Ability to lift/pull up to 20 lbs. 

    • Ability to perform outreach in the community, including walking through neighborhoods, which may include visiting buildings and homes that may have stairs and/or other external elements, including weather for several hours at a time

  • Other Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Education:

    • Minimum of 2 years of loan processing experience or, 2 years of customer service/customer relations experience or, college degree or any combination of the noted skills that demonstrates ability to perform the responsibilities of this position

    • Ability to conduct presentations and speak to diverse audiences in a variety of settings

    • Valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Habitat’s insurance provider and meet host site’s insurance

    • Consistent and reliable attendance with ability and willingness to work flexible hours as needed, including Saturdays and some evenings

    • Demonstrated experience and sensitivity in working with persons of low-income and from diverse backgrounds

    • Possess self-motivation and broad thinking

    • Intermediate-level experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet searches, typing

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

    • Exceptional organizational skills and dedication to completing projects in a timely manner, with adherence to schedules and deadlines

    • Advanced attention to detail

    • Ability to multi-task and prioritize appropriately

    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment

    • Ability to effectively manage volunteers

    • Represent Habitat in a positive and professional manner

    • Be an effective team member when working with staff and volunteers

  • Anticipated commitment of 40 hours/week
  • Tuesday - Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm (occasional evening and weekend hours required) 

Level of Authority:                 

  • Requires minimal supervision
  • Reports to Director of Family Selection 
  • Authorized to furnish necessary personal information of applicants to Family Selection volunteer and third-party organizations and companies for the sole purpose of processing applications.  All other requests for personal information of applicants or staff should be referred to the Director of Family Selection.
