About the Job

As a Principal Industrial Designer at our Boston studio, you will lead teams of creative professionals to create products that are user-centric and informed by formal user research. You will work closely with the research, interaction design, and engineering teams to craft elegant products across consumer, medical device, and commercial spaces. As a senior member of the team, you will act as Industrial Design Technical Lead on projects with a client-facing role and present your team’s work to leading clients across multiple industries. Above all, you’re excited to create products of the future for our world-class clients. You will play an active role in further developing the design team in the Boston office and you have an interest in mentoring and managing other designers.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Act as Technical Lead on client projects for the Industrial Design team working alongside researchers, strategists, designers, and engineers.
  • Lead group idea generation workshops, collaborating with and guiding other industrial designers.
  • Work with other industrial designers to develop high quality design deliverables and present them to clients in a timely manner.
  • Generate compelling product design concepts, developing their aesthetics, functionality, ergonomics, and construction via sketching, CAD modeling / rendering and prototyping.
  • Define digital / physical product workflows in collaboration with Interaction Design.
  • Guide design intent through design for manufacturing and into final engineering implementation.
  • Work with our discipline leadership and the local managing director to expand and develop the Boston Industrial Design team.
  • Understand the benefits, and advocate for multi-disciplinary collaboration and design on projects.
  • Develop and deliver compelling approaches and proposals for clients and support the sales team with your technical expertise.
  • Travel to clients to facilitate project kickoffs and key milestone presentations and join field research with the Insights and Strategy or Human Factors teams (up to 10%).
About You

Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design from an accredited Industrial Design program.
  • 10+ years of experience in product design in the consumer, commercial, and medical device spaces.
  • 4+ years of experience working in a consulting environment
  • Expertise in form development, 2D digital sketching and visualization (e.g., Sketchbook Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator), 3D CAD modeling (ideally using Solidworks), and computer rendering and/or animation (e.g., Keyshot).
  • High proficiency in Adobe and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • You have a true passion for Industrial Design and human-centered product design, and your portfolio strongly demonstrates this passion.
  • You are curious about emerging technology in Product Design and User Experience, and clever new ways of designing everyday things.
  • You can successfully lead clients through problem definition and the innovation process during workshop sessions.
  • You dig into challenges and find hidden opportunities.
  • You balance an open mind and creativity with analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • You have a natural ability to lead by example and manage creative teams on projects.
  • You have a high level of comfort in all client-facing activities and great interpersonal skills.
  • You have excellent writing and presentation skills both needed for workshop facilitation and client presentations.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and complexity, because sometimes that leads to the most unique, unexpected design solutions.
  • You want to work in an environment where things move quickly, and youre happy to adapt as situations shift.
  • You act with an inclusive mindset and model these behaviors for the organization.
