What we're looking for

As a Research Associate, you will be a member of the Food Science Team and have the unique opportunity to contribute to the work of GOOD Meat, the first-to-market cell-cultured meat product.

In this role, you will support Food Scientists with day-to-day project tasks including organizing the lab, ingredients, formulated products, help conduct benchtop tests, set up & clean Food Processing system before and after experiments, and help assemble and disassemble Food Processing system and manage all samples with proper storage. We will provide appropriate training on all aspects of the role, and you have the opportunity to collaborate, work and learn from our broader R&D team.

Our ideal candidate will have a B.S. degree in Food Science or relevant field with hands-on experience in a laboratory or pilot plant setting. You will be a quick learner with excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude and excited to play a part in changing the future of food.


What you'll do

  • Be part of a team that develops innovative cellular agriculture-based animal products, including chicken nuggets, chicken breasts and beef patties, and participate in pilot extrusion runs for GOOD Meat development, responsible for ingredient preparation, ingredient analysis, equipment maintenance, and product analysis;
  • Develop and conduct ingredient and product analysis such as moisture content, pH, conductivity, bulk density, flowability test and texture assay. Perform bench top tests as directed by the Food Scientists as needed for both ingredients and samples with supervision and guidance from scientists;
  • Work with other members of the Food Science team to design and conduct sensory studies;
  • Enter analytical & process data in excel worksheets for easy management & weekly reports;
  • Complete all documentation and data analysis in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and sanitary work area in both the Food Science Lab as well as Pilot Plant where food processing will be conducted;
  • Prepare Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs); follow all GMP protocols as required;
  • Have the opportunity to travel to remote operating sites (both domestically and internationally) as needed;
  • Support additional projects, initiatives, and tasks throughout R&D as required;
  • Additional duties and responsibilities throughout R&D as required;
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs of raw material, instruments, or extruder parts
  • What you'll bring
  • You're a team player with a can-do attitude, excited to work in a collaborative, dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • You have a B.S. degree in Food Process Engineering, Food Technology, Biological/ Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Science or related field with 0-2 years experience; Master’s degree ideal;
  • Hands-on experience in food laboratories/ food companies especially in pilot plant ideals;
  • Ability to conduct various food laboratory tests with inputs from scientists;
  • Experience using and operating basic food analytical instruments will be a plus;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel & Word;
  • Ability to pass a standard background check.


Additional Information & Requirements

  • This is a full-time regular position based out of our Headquarters in San Francisco, CA until we move to our new Alameda Office (targeted February 2022).
  • This role requires the ability to travel without restrictions, both domestically and internationally 10-15% of the time. Candidates must possess a passport or willingness to obtain one.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and is frequently required to work standing for extended periods of time as well as climb stairs/ladders and elevated work platforms.
