Director, Education Research and Evaluation

Participate Learning is recruiting a Director to lead the research, evaluation and assessment of our K12 education products. Participate Learning is a leader in global education, supporting 1200+ visiting international teachers at over 400 schools in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, including 120 dual language and global school programs. This position will design research initiatives, coordinate data collection, and perform analysis to demonstrate our products’ impact across a range of education contexts (teachers, schools, districts, and students). This position will also work closely with company leadership, partnership, and marketing teams to support client acquisition and customer loyalty with evidence-based research and education industry expertise.

In this role, the Director will lead the organization’s research framework by providing state-of-the-art research, evaluation and assessment expertise and information for diverse stakeholders to maximize decision-making and classroom impact. The Director will use mixed-methods research studies to help generate creative solutions aligned with our mission of expanding high-quality global education.

Essential Functions:

The Director will need to skillfully balance setting the company’s strategy and conducting the work with sufficient technical expertise. This position will work cross-functionally to ensure strategic alignment and coordination with multiple internal teams including program implementation, new product development, sales, and marketing. Specifically, this role will focus on 3 key areas: 


  • Craft and oversee the strategic release and dissemination of our Annual Research Report to support Participate Learning’s Strategic Plan.

  • Lead the organization’s effort to build internal knowledge about key policy issues in the field, including being a leader on emerging research and policy endeavors.

  • Conduct research around specific education drivers.

  • Produce and deliver exemplary content and data analytics (including memos, reports, presentations, etc.) to promote outcomes.

  • Facilitate and implement research and design cycles to provide findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Integrate research functions into Participate Learning’s product development, implementation, and support.

    • Assist the product development team in research and data analytics activities that will inform the business impact potential of new products. This includes analyzing the competitive environment, new product testing metrics (fake door tests, page views/clicks, conversion rates, survey responses, etc.), as well as branding, marketing, and pricing strategy.

    • Assist online community owners in the collection and analysis of relevant community metrics (online community engagement metrics, course completion rates, page views, etc.)

  • Manage research projects towards successful outcomes: plan work, manage contributions, anticipate areas of challenge, look for opportunities, and make adjustments to meet timelines and budget.

  • Support new customer acquisition, customer loyalty and RFPs through education research and expertise, including attending client meetings and conferences.


  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of the effectiveness of programs and initiatives to inform continuous improvement.

  • Lead survey development, administration, analysis, and reporting to inform programs and initiatives.

  • Partner with school and district staff to create evaluation plans, data tools, and support data use.

  • Supervise the analysis and reporting of program data and oversee the continuing development of strong data infrastructure, management systems, and policies to support the growth of the organization.

  • Review literature and other pertinent information relating to best practices in global education.


  • Analyze district-wide formative, interim, and summative assessments to guide organization’s ability to support programs for maximum benefit.

  • Provide guidance to school and district partners about best-in-class assessment options.

  • Create user-friendly tools as needed to input and view organization’s data.

  • Train staff on how to view and use various assessment data.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in educational planning, research, statistics, or related field required; Doctorate strongly preferred; training and experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with K-12 student growth and proficiency data and teacher effectiveness/EVAAS data.

  • 5 years of experience leading, designing, and conducting evaluations, assessments, and research in a relevant field.

  • Working knowledge of statistics, (with an emphasis on sample design, power calculations and data analysis), familiarity with utilizing software packages such as Stata, SPSS, or SAS, and experience with systematic review methodologies to evaluate instructional programming.

  • Demonstrated experience with leading major quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method research studies.

  • Demonstrated expertise in studying and/or facilitating processes through which organizations improve performance and outcomes.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings to multiple stakeholders in written and verbal forms, including speeches, presentation, peer-reviewed journals, and professional publications.

  • Ability to think creatively, strategically, critically and analytically.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders, both internally and externally.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in educational planning, research, statistics, or a related field.

  • Experience in the K-12 education sector (i.e., classroom teacher, school administrator, central office employee.)

  • Familiarity with local, district, state, and national education policy.

  • Proficient in a second language.
