Certified Braille Transcriber

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


•    Performs Braille transcription of a variety of printed materials into Braille code using transcription software
•    Transcribes materials in both literary and Nemeth codes
•    Formats textbooks using “Braille Formats:  Principles of Print to Braille Transcription” (2016)
•    Proofreads and verifies accuracy of Braille-coded materials prior to quality assurance review
•    Prepares Braille materials (e.g., tests, textbooks, magazines, NLS trade books, study materials, charts, tactile illustrations, research documents, menus, impressers, and other related media aids) using specialized computer software, equipment, tools, techniques and standards set forth by the Braille Authority of North America (BANA) 
•    Attends meetings, workshops, and conferences related to ongoing certification as required
•    Communicates with outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues
•    Analyzes and interprets graphical material for Braille tactile graphics and incorporates proper Braille usage or tooling as required
 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS


•    Must have NLS literary certification in UEB or have earned a letter of proficiency in UEB
•    Formats or Nemeth certification preferred
•    Must be able to read Braille by sight or touch
•    Literary Braille Code experience preferred
•    Must be able to apply Rules of Braille Format to simple and complex educational materials
•    Strong knowledge of the process of archiving materials on a network drive
•    Strong knowledge of English grammar, ability to follow detailed instructions, excellent organizational and analytical skills required
•    Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word
•    Ability to type 40 words per minute required
•    Other duties as assigned

 

COMPENSATION

New Hire Rate starting at:  $17.95                    After 30 days worked:  $18.95


Hours:        7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday 

7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday (with every other Friday off)
