Manager of Software Engineering

The Art of Education University (AOEU) is seeking a Manager of Software Engineering. We're looking for an engineering leader with experience managing agile development teams across multiple product domains within the engineering team. Our Manager of Software Engineering will be responsible for ensuring that our software meets product requirements and is built for long-term scalability, while also delivering a consistent user experience and high reliability. You'll be managing a team of engineers and software quality engineers, collaborating with product managers, content developers, and other cross-functional leaders in the organization, and helping to build and execute the product and technical vision that supports AOEU's growth.

This position will operate within the Product Division, reporting to the Chief Product Officer. The Product Division within AOEU is responsible for instantiating all aspects of AOEUs digital presence. We value data-driven decision-making, customer-centric design, and a growth-oriented mindset.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS | Manager of Software Engineering |

• Partner with the business to have a clear understanding of how the tech stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line
• Support the engineering team and our roadmap by directly contributing to the codebase, taking ownership of stories, and being hands-on in the delivery of projects
• Recruit, retain, and coach a team of software engineers and software quality engineers
• Work collaboratively with engineering and product leaders to manage our platform, architecture, and teams to get the most innovation and effectiveness from our resources
• Ensure delivery of high-quality, secure, and reliable software that meets the needs of our customers, the business, and internal stakeholders
• Break down outcomes into deliverable epics, and prioritize work in partnership with product management and product design
• Lead and deliver on technical strategy and guide teams through technology decisions pragmatically
• Partner with product and work cross-functionally with other leaders in the organization to build out and prioritize technical roadmaps
• Formulate and implement an architectural vision for AOEUs ecosystem of learning platforms, that doesn't outpace or fall behind the needs of the business and our products
• Interface with content development teams to optimize the content publishing process
• Inspire, support, and motivate your team in a remote working environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong verbal, visual, and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions to stakeholders at all levels in the organization
• Ability to think strategically and see the big picture while also focusing teams on execution and delivery
• Experience in developing SaaS platforms that have a high level of data integration and exchange capabilities for large-scale enterprise customers
• Expertise in developing modern microservice architectures focused on minimizing maintenance burdens by leveraging cloud-native technologies in AWS, GCP, Heroku, and/or Vercel
• Experience developing enterprise-grade applications using React, Golang, Python, and headless CMSs.
• Proven success working closely with Product Management, contributing to the product strategy, and helping to successfully deliver on the product roadmap.
• Experience developing and executing thoughtful, pragmatic strategies that address and incorporate technical debt in system architecture.
• Experience partnering with external development and design partners, in both staff augmentation and project-based engagement models
• Ability to lead diverse distributed teams with a culture-first mindset
• Values ownership, radical candor, and shared success at its core
• Ability to use the first principle, using both qualitative and quantitative data, to solve complex problems
• A willingness and comfort with communicating remotely through chat, docs, video calls, and other collaborative online tools

Position Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of experience in commercial software engineering with designing, building, and operating distributed systems
• 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and market.
