Position Description


Eastern Mennonite University seeks to hire a dean for its School of Theology, Humanities, and Performing Arts and invites inquiries, nominations, and applications. Located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, EMU offers rigorous academic study grounded in the liberal arts at the undergraduate, graduate, and seminary levels. More than 2,000 students study at the main campus in Harrisonburg, Virginia; the Lancaster, Pennsylvania site; the Washington Community Scholars’ Center in Washington, D.C.; and online. EMU is grounded in faith-based values including service to others, Christian discipleship, peacemaking, and community-building, all of which prepare students to serve and lead in a global context.

The dean will nurture the intellectual life and culture of the school while advancing the university’s vision and mission as a diverse, equitable, and inclusive student-centered community of learning, opening new pathways of access and achievement for all students, and preparing them to serve and lead in a global context. Candidates must have a strong commitment to delivering high-quality service to students, faculty, and staff, and be enthusiastic about supporting the university’s vision and mission. POSITION: Dean, EMU School of Theology, Humanities and Performing Arts. The dean will provide leadership for all undergraduate and graduate programs in the school, including Eastern Mennonite Seminary. The dean’s role at EMU may include a minimal teaching load.


QUALIFICATIONS: Required: terminal degree in an appropriate field; teaching and academic administrative experience; commitment to the central role of theology and humanities at a private faith-based liberal arts university. Applicants with a degree in a seminary-related discipline are particularly welcome.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide intellectual and strategic leadership for the School of Theology, Humanities, and Performing Arts while working collaboratively with the deans of EMU’s two other schools and the dean of students to deliver a consistent and holistic EMU experience for all students. Oversee strategic planning and implementation of all academic programs in the school, including Eastern Mennonite Seminary. Publicly represent and advocate for the school within the university and with external constituencies. Collaborate with enrollment and marketing divisions to grow student enrollment and develop market-responsive program innovation. Recruit excellent faculty and staff, supporting their success via ongoing professional development and promotion. Respond to student appeals and concerns. Participate in key university leadership teams, including Provost’s Council and President’s Cabinet. Assist in leading university Academic Council, and serve on other committees as requested.


POSITION DETAILS: Twelve-month contract. Salary determined by education and experience.
