Position Summary: The Senior Editor serves as both an Editor and a Project Manager, with additional opportunities for growth toward higher management positions if desired.  A Senior Editor builds on the skills of an Editor, evaluating and editing manuscripts and digital resources and guiding product development from an education and editorial perspective.  A Senior Editor leads one or more projects and project teams and fully owns the product development process from planning through production and post publication. 


Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with project teams to plan new products.
  • Takes initiative to stay current on market needs through classroom observations and field testing of new products in development.
  • Works directly with authors as materials are being written to ensure that the content reflects our mission and the product goals.  Makes changes or guides Editors to make changes as needed for clarification, and may rewrite or reorganize materials to better meet the needs of teachers and students.
  • Edits and guides Editors to edit product manuscripts and digital resources for multiple product lines, ensuring educational validity, clarity, purposefulness, best practices, and ease of use.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of educational trends, practices, and interests (especially as relevant to his/her projects) and advises team leadership accordingly.
  • Manages projects in the project manager role: managing project budget(s); managing project-related data; setting and maintaining a project schedule; leading project team meeting(s); overseeing the quality of the product; collaborating with the Business Services team to leverage the knowledge and skill of project team members to create the best possible product, on time and on budget. 
  • May be actively involved in sales and marketing-related activities for his/her projects: consulting on marketing collateral; contributing to key sales appointments; conducting ride alongs with sales consultants; making effective and engaging presentations on behalf of the company to the sales team or customers; or recruiting and assessing market trends at trade shows and conferences.

  • May serve as a manager, developing effective leadership and mentoring skills to build capacity of staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree in education or related field and teaching credential
  • K-12 classroom teaching experience required (3+ years preferred)
  • Master’s degree or advanced studies/training/specialty (strongly preferred)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Project management experience (preferred)
  • Editorial experience in publishing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit for extended periods of time; including at a computer.
  • Occasional lifting up to 15 lbs.
  • Repetitive hand and wrist movements for frequent use of computer keyboard and mouse.
