Location:                     Camp Motorsport, AstroCamp & Camp CHOP

Work Year:                  Summer Estimated Dates (June 7th, 2022 to August 14th, 2022)

Responsible to:           Program Director

(These are estimated dates that could change due to COVID-19 guidelines and the State of Virginia/Clover County)

General Responsibility:

The Driving Instructor is responsible for all aspects of the driving program, including; instruction and supervision.  Being able to perform safely and responsibly at all times, not only when campers are present.  Must have the ability to represent the program not only to campers but also to parents and the wider community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (Examples of Duties):

  1. Implement and instruct the camp’s driving instructional and safety program activities.
  2. Maintain safe driving conditions by ensuring that all safety procedures are followed at each driving location, including safety inspections of camper pre driving inspections.
  3. Move and prepare program cars/karts driving gear, safety equipment, and driving instructional supplies to driving activity areas as required. Ensure that everything required for teaching is at the ready prior to instructional sessions.
  4. Communicate the need for vehicle fueling with supervisory staff.
  5. Report any issues with any vehicles to supervisory staff.
  6. Assist campers in putting on gear, getting in/out of cars/karts, and securing safety equipment.
  7. Clean driving gear (suits, helmets, etc), instructional equipment, karts, etc as directed.
  8. Assist in maintaining written records and reports of inspections, maintenance, and equipment inventory as directed
  9. Carry out and enforce camp safety regulations.
  10. Establish and maintain an environment that supports the physical and emotional safety and well-being of each participant in driving program areas and activities.
  11. Provide opportunities for each camper to experience individual driving success.
  12. Help ensure that each camper meets the goals established by the camp for camper development.
  13. Carry out decision-making in a manner that focuses on the physical and emotional safety of the participants, is appropriate for the age of the campers, and meets the needs of participants.
  14. Role model and set good examples for campers, including in areas of safety, and sportsmanship.
  15. Be able to work with a variety of campers, counselors, supervisors, and other staff effectively.
  16. Ability to communicate any problems with staff or campers to Camp Director, Program Director, or Head Counselor(s).
  17. Encourage respect for camp property, personal property, and facilities.
  18. Adhere to Personnel Policies and all established rules and regulations for staff conduct.
  19. Be in good physical condition with mobility, visual, and auditory skills to maintain control of 8-10 campers in a variety of environments (on tracks, in learning sessions, in the water, etc.).
  20. Any other duties as assigned by leadership team.

First year instructors will receive $375.00 per week, along with opportunities to make extra money with extra responsibilities. (i.e. weekend campouts).


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least two years older than the oldest camper age group (oldest camper=17 years old).
  2. Past experience working with youth.
  3. Must have strong communication and human relation skills.
  4. Able to accept supervision and guidance and assist in activities where needed.
  5. Desire to live and work in a remote camp community.
  6. Desire to work with children and the ability to supervise them in related activities.
  7. Good character, integrity, flexibility, and adaptability.
  8. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
  9. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position successfully.
  10. Desired Qualifications (not required)
  • Certification in lifeguard training (American Red Cross)
  • First aid and CPR
