Location:                                 Camp Motorsport, AstroCamp & Camp CHOP

Employment Length:              Whole Summer / 1 Week / Multiple 1 Weeks (Sunday-Saturday)

Employment Dates Range:     June 1st, 2021 to August 14th, 2021

Responsible to:                       Camp Director/Program Director

General Responsibility:

The Camp Nurse will evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, supervise medication distribution and insure implementation medication policies and procedures at camp. Camo Nurses also keep a log of Health Center visits, give supportive advice to counselors and other camp staff if requested, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician’s attention.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Required minimum level of medical training:
    • Registered Nurse, able to treat in the state of Virginia
    • Any higher level of medical training, and able to treat in the state of Virginia
    • Your license will be verified before interview
  2. Experience working volunteering with youth.
  3. Good bedside manner, friendly and personable
  4. Confidence in nursing skills.
  5. Must have strong communication and human relations skills.
  6. Able to accept supervision and guidance with regards to camp operation (non-medical).
  7. Desire to live and work in a remote camp community.
  8. Desire to work with children.
  9. Good character, integrity, flexibility, and adaptability.
  10. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
  11. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position successfully.

Specific Responsibilities (Examples of Duties):

  • Treating campers (and staff) for minor illness/injury.
  • Ensuring campers take their prescribed medication at the required times
  • Initial treatment and stabilization should there be an emergency at camp. 
  • Communicating with camp administrators with regards to any concerns or more serious medical needs. 
  • Working with our Summer Camp Director to communicate questions or concerns to camper parents.
  • Maintaining a clean clinic
  • Keeping stock of medical supplies and informing Camp Director before things run out
  • Observing camper to ensure optimum health and safety levels
  • Maintaining camp first aid kits

Essential Functions:

  1. Caring for the medical needs of campers and staff
  2. Must be able to work with the campers, counselors, supervisors, and other staff effectively.
  3. Oversee the health and wellness of approximately 60 campers and 20 staff.
  4. Conduct initial health screening of all campers on arrival
  5. Provide medical attention to campers and staff with general health concerns and document in Health Log
  6. Distribute and record camper medications
  7. Maintain Health Center record and medical forms
  8. Communicate specific camper health needs to staff
  9. Ability to communicate any problems or health issues with staff or campers to Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, or Head Counselor(s).
  10. Schedule appointments for sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital or clinic
  11. Be a “primary care giver” to our campers.
  12. Be in good physical condition with mobility, visual, and auditory skills.
  13. Excellent communication and organization skills.
  14. Ability to work effectively as part of a team or on solo project as required.
  15. Ability to appropriately respond to emergencies and enforce appropriate safety rules.

 Salary:

Two options available

  1. Trade Option: Trade one week of work, for one week of any camp session for a related child.
  2. Cash Payment Option: Camp nurses will be paid $1500 for one week of work.

Upon your arrival at camp (or prior to upon request) you will be supplied with a copy of our Camp Nurse Handbook & COVID-19 supplement. These documents will detail you need to know to help us maintain a safe and healthy environment at camp. The COVID-19 supplement based in guidance approved by the State of Virginia and the American Camp Association.
