Under the supervision of the Chief Development Officer, you will lead the Marketing Department strategy to create a strong brand that will help the organization acquire financial, human and social resources, and build key partnerships. You will lead a team driven by increasing visibility for the organization and spreading our message of inclusion. You will collaborate with a community of Special Olympics athletes, families, partners, donors, students, and communities that envision a world for all, driven by the power of sport, through which people with intellectual disabilities live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Marketing and Communications Department oversight, growth and development for the organization.
  • Expand and communicate the Mission and impact of Special Olympics to a broad base with consistency
  • Ensure that the organizations mission and vision are established and implicit throughout the organization so that all stakeholders can:
    • Share the organizations mission and vision
    • Engage people outside the organization to encourage participation and support for our mission
    • Utilize the talents and expertise of others to advance and enhance the organization
  • Develop and execute key annual marketing campaigns as well as event-based campaigns.
  • Lead the team in prioritizing and communicating key messages to maximize impact and the ability to attract funding.
  • Lead efforts to maximize visibility of Special Olympics to attract new athletes and families to the organization and to establish Special Olympics Northern California as a leader in our field.
  • Execute aspects of our three-year strategic plan including working with cross functional teams on interdependent goals for the organization.
  • Provide guidance to the Marketing team on planning, development, and implementation of the Organization's marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal.
  • Develop short and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing/communications/ public relations program and its activities, monitor progress, support fulfillment of these plans and evaluate performance.
  • Supervise, support, coach, provide professional development opportunities for your team. Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates quality staff
  • Provide on the ground support to the team and other departments to meet deliverables; this is a hands-on management position.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

This position requires specific skills to be successful and to complement our existing team, including, but not limited to:

  • Minimum five years of specific marketing experience
  • Experience Designing and implementing strategic communication plans that include print, social media, PR, design, storytelling and impact marketing
  • A track record of increasing visibility and supporting an organization with Development and Program Teams.
  • Robust knowledge of market trends to enhance the organizations reach and audience.
  • Understanding of how to amplify the voices of those most impacted by our program in order to tell authentic stories of impact.
  • Willingness to be collaborative and supportive and to recommend process improvements to increase the efficiency of the Marketing Team.
  • Computer proficiency including: Google Analytics, understanding of website design, Pardot, Asana, Microsoft Office Suite and relational databases such as SalesForce.
  • Broad understanding of various social media platforms.
  • Experience leading a multi-faceted team juggling multiple initiatives and tasks; supervision experience in a nonprofit setting is a plus
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and drive time sensitive projects to completion
  • Excellent relationship/partnership building skills
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal including strong presentation skills
  • Strong problem analysis and problem-solving skills.


Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications or related field required and/or equivalent, relevant work experience

  • We offer an inclusive, casual work environment. To protect the health of our staff, we are currently working remotely.
  • We are headquartered in Pleasant Hill, with an additional office in Sacramento. This position requires occasional local travel on weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Salary Range: Starts at $75K/year, negotiable DOE (exempt position). This position is also eligible for an incentive bonus based on meeting fundraising goals for 2021.
