Director of Advancement


The Altamont School seeks a dynamic and experienced Director Of Advancement. The Director of Advancement reports to and is under the immediate supervision of the School Administrator and is responsible to develop and oversee a comprehensive school fund-raising program. The Director of Advancement will develop and oversee the strategy, structure, and management of The Altamont School's fund-raising efforts and is responsible for the planning, organization, and coordination of the efforts that are necessary to raise gift income.

Essential Functions

Strategic Planning and Management

  • Draft and implement an aggressive fundraising program designed to attract the maximum gift support possible to The Altamont School.  This program includes the Capital Campaign; the Annual Fund; major and designated gifts; planned giving programs; corporate and foundation proposals.
  • Identify prospects for the Capital Campaign, based on prior giving, Annual Fund Participation, or prospect research, matching prospects with appropriate volunteers (Board members and others) or staff for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Support volunteers, the Head of School, and the Board President with portfolio of campaign prospects.
  • Develop and maintain reports on the progress toward goals.
  • Schedule, staff, and organize all campaign steering committee meetings, and campaign chair conference calls.
  • Build relationships with a variety of constituencies. Identify and solicit donor prospects, prepare, and present proposals to private donors, corporations, foundations, and other granting agencies.
  • Organize alumni, past parent, grandparent, and parent sub-committees to support the campaign efforts.
  • Acknowledge and track gifts, correspondence, and communication with donors.
  • Plan and facilitate activities/occasions to initiate and maintain contact with present and prospective donors.
  • Encourage and appropriately recognize donor philanthropy.
  • Create, maintain, and update a prospect database of current and potential donors.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for the raising of funds through individuals, corporations, businesses, and foundations.
  • Seek out and implement all appropriate sources of fundraising.
  • Solicit, recruit, and organize fundraising volunteers.
  • Support the mission, policies, and practices of The Altamont School.
  • Inform the Head of School on a weekly basis of the fundraising activities of the office.
  • Create a coordinated publications and printing program which will most effectively communicate with various constituencies, including but not limited to the regular publication of the Alumni Magazine and the Annual Giving Report and regular e-newsletter to alumni and current parents.
  • Oversee the processing of all gift income for the purpose of providing receipts and of maintaining giving records of donors to the school.
  • Oversee all special events related to fundraising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

  • Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to travel as required.

Required Education and Experience

  • Education: bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.  
  • A minimum of 8 years experience in fund development with a proven track record of success in raising funds particularly by securing major gifts, successful fundraising capital campaigns, and building a community of motivated supporters.
  • Works independently, efficiently, and is a self-starter.
  • A passion for the value of and need to support specialized education.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write and speak enthusiastically and persuasively about Altamont School.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to ethical standards of the advancement/development profession.
  • A working knowledge of development best practices, trends in independent school education and development, fundraising tools and technology including donor databases, email and online campaigns, and donor research.
  • Extreme tact and discretion, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.
  • Extensive organizational and people skills with experience in working independently.
  • Proficient with office, database, and donor tracking software such as Raiser’s Edge NXT.
  • Maintains confidentiality
