POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, Aquatics Lead, and Swim Lesson Lead, the Swim Instructor at the Minot Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
- Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and throughout shift.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
- Greet and assist all members, potential members, volunteers, and staff in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner. Be enthusiastic towards members by learning their names and expressing an interest in their YMCA activities. Strive to enrich their YMCA experience by introducing them to new programs, staff, members, and volunteer activities.
- Respond to members' needs. Contact appropriate personnel when necessary. Handle complaints in a courteous manner. Effectively negotiate and resolve customer service problems.
- Assist in maintenance duties to include sweeping, mopping, and general cleanliness of Aquatics areas.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the YMCA rules, policies, and emergency procedures and act as the control center for the Aquatics Area and Locker Rooms during emergency situations.
- Shares aquatic program information with members, using available tools and resources (e.g., handouts, schedules).
- Maintain working knowledge of swim lesson and aquatics trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- Assist other staff as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
