POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Language Arts Teacher is responsible for creating a supportive, empowering learning environment for adult learners and delivering quality content area instruction in reading, social studies, and writing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction and Support for Adult Learners:

  • Teach a course load of at least 2 classes per day of adult literacy, basic education, secondary, and/or post-secondary level classes required for a successful transition into the workforce or postsecondary education.  
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that ensure the attainment of state learning standards and the additional specific learning standards set forth in the school’s charter. 
  • Provide ongoing assessment of individual adult learner progress and adapt curriculum and lesson plans according to the needs of the learners.
  • Coordinate extracurricular activities, such as field trips or other experiential learning opportunities, to complement in-class instruction. 
  • Coordinate lesson plans with other teachers to maximize collaboration and student learning. 
  • Provide direction to volunteer instructors serving as co-teachers, teaching assistants or providing tutoring (one-on-one or in small groups) to adult learners in your classes. 
  • Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management. 
  • Coordinate with Student Support Services to ensure adult learners get both the academic and social services they need to be successful in school and in their transition to college or career.  Participate in regular meetings with Student Support Services for this purpose. 
  • Provide office hours on a regular basis and/or as needed to support individual learner progress.

Program Administration and Data Collection:

  • Provide accurate and timely collection and entry of student attendance, class progress and disciplinary actions, if needed. 
  • Coordinate with Performance Evaluation and Research (PER) Team in collecting and recording student progress and achievement data, as well as other data that may be required. 

Professional Development:

  • Commit to ongoing professional development in adult literacy/education.
  • Participate in professional learning circles and/or peer coaching sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree and secondary or adult education experience required

Experience:

  • Experience with Common Core and/or College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults.
  • Familiarity with CASAS.

Computer/Technology Skills:

  • Must have solid technical skills - Previous experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite required
  • Experience with various online platforms

Other Necessary Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong cultural competency skills required, including excellent ability to communicate with a diverse population. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong computer skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various departments. 
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment and a computer keyboard.

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to file materials. 
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs.
  • Must be able to withstand extended viewing of computer screens.
  • This position will sit in an open/shared office environment with moderate noise levels.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position is currently working a hybrid model, telework and on-site. Schedule to be determined by Senior Leadership.
