Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the global organization’s presence in the United States. The Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator (18 month fixed term) will play an important role in supporting projects that build and strengthen the Grassroots Leadership and Engagement (GLE) Unit, which is part of the Movement Building and Member Engagement Department. GLE staff build grassroots capacity to advance AIUSA’s human rights work through recruiting, retaining, and skills development of activists and broad national networks. 

 

This role is a union position and covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Communication Workers of America (CWA), Local 1180. 

  

 

Reporting to the Grassroots Legislative Manager and the Member Leader Program Manager, the Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator will provide ongoing programmatic and administrative support to AIUSA's Member Leader and Grassroots Legislative programs. These national programs manage and support grassroots engagement, leadership development, and human rights activism at AIUSA. This position requires collaboration with both AIUSA members and staff. 

 

 

Essential Responsibilities  

 

Strategic planning and communications  

  • Manages the recruitment and retention processes for member leader programs, including scheduling interviews, communicating with candidates, posting and recruiting for roles 

  • Facilitates the design, marketing, and distribution of unit communications and resources 

  • Supports the planning and implementation of unit events, mailings, and trainings 

  • Contributes to unit strategic planning and goal-setting processes 

  • Supports digital tracking and management of unit budget, data, and reporting 

  • Participates in shared responsibility and collaboration with volunteer leaders 

  • Responds to inquiries from various stakeholders 

  • Other duties as assigned 

 

 

Member Leader and Grassroots Legislative Specific Responsibilities (up to 50%) 

  • Monitors and tests strategies that support recruitment, retention, training, and engagement of grassroots human rights advocates via the Member Leader and Grassroots Legislative Programs 

  • Supports the development and maintenance of the Member Leader and Grassroots Legislative Programs’ web pages, interest forms, contact lists, and electronic communications 

  • Collects and assesses demographic information and other data related to our grassroots human rights advocates (and their networks) and applies findings to initiatives to grow diversity 

  • Supports the development and tracking of online and social media advocacy actions. 

  • Helps coordinate the planning, implementation, and evaluation of volunteer leader convenings and grassroots lobbying initiatives, for both in-person and virtual platforms 

  • Manages the intake of asylum seeker requests for support 

  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

  • Strong project management skills, capable of planning, prioritizing, and troubleshooting and meeting deadlines 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention-to-detail 

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen well, build trust, and work across teams to achieve goals 

  • Experience managing, inputting, and updating member data and project status by using different systems like google, ROI, Microsoft and quorum  

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and initiate creative solutions 

  • Demonstrated commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility) 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement systems or processes for a team 

  • Ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports and other materials 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop presentations and facilitate workshops or trainings for diverse groups 

 

 

Education and Experience 

  • BA/BS with at least 3 years of relevant experience 

  • Experience working in non-profits, grassroots coalitions, or member-based organizations preferred 

  • Experience recruiting, and working with, volunteers or members 

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills  

  • Experience managing a budget and working with vendors is a plus 

  • Experience in web design, word press, and/or using creative design programs (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.)  

  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications 

  • Background working on human rights, social justice, and/or grassroots advocacy efforts strongly preferred 

 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at a desk and working on a computer 

 

 

Travel Requirements, Weeknight or Weekend Work 

  • Domestic travel for conferences and events  

  • Some weeknights or weekend work is required
