The Manager of Gallery Learning is responsible for Identifying, training, scheduling and evaluating gallery teachers, specifically the volunteer docents(approximately 70), part-time educators(8) and museum associate(1). S/he identifies program and training needs and employs best practices in adult learning to support these educators in their gallery teaching. S/he reports to the Director of Education.
Leads group of volunteer docents in order to ensure that programs are implemented with a high level of quality by:
- Identifying the needs of the museum’s audiences and programs, and identifying docents that can facilitate conversations that align with these needs.
- Supervising, scheduling, coaching, and evaluating docents
- Preparing and maintaining enrichment calendar for continuing docents
- Maintaining accurate contact information by creating, distributing, and updating group contact information as needed.
- Serving as main point of contact for docents to answer questions and solve challenges.
- Communicating with docents about program information and expectations
- Providing support to the docents including a docent leadership committee
- Becoming familiar with docent needs
Leads group of museum educators and education associates in order to ensure that programs are implemented with a high level of quality by
- In collaboration with managers interviewing candidates
- Supervising, coaching, and evaluating staff. Planning and leading new-hire and monthly training sessions. Providing ongoing mentorship to team
- Preparing and maintaining monthly schedule by compiling all program dates and staff availability, assigning shifts to appropriate staff, updating shared calendar, revising the calendar as needed, and communicating with full-time staff to ensure programmatic needs are fulfilled.
- Maintaining accurate contact information for staff by creating, distributing, and updating group contact information as needed.
- Communicating with staff about program information and expectations
In collaboration with Education Team, conducts the on-going evaluation of exhibitions, installations, and gallery teachers and programs by
- Fostering a culture of reflection and evaluation
- Providing ongoing feedback on program content, delivery, and visitor engagement strategies
- Acting as the point person for an outside evaluator
- Facilitating cross-departmental conversations regarding program evaluation results
Aligns the programmatic needs of other departments with the delivery of content and gallery experiences by
- Collaborating with the School Programs Team to help shape effective experiences for Prek-12 school audiences.
- Collaborating with the Community Programs Team to continually evaluate the content and format of in-gallery conversations for Thursday night programming and other adult/community programs.
- Collaborating with the Family Programs team to align the training of Museum educators with the training of the docents.
- Becoming familiar with docents’ needs, skills, and preferences to match docents with tours.
Supports PreK-12 tours and studios as well as adult tours by:
- Strategizing about how the work of the docents can support the efforts of other departments.
- Leading tours to special interest groups, VIPs, schools, and adults as needed.
- Leading PreK-12 tours and studio classes as needed
