We are looking for an experienced Staff Attorney to join our SAFE team in Los Angeles.


We are the nation’s largest legal and civil rights organization for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (NHPI). The Survivor and Family Empowerment (“SAFE”) Project assists low-income and limited-English speaking survivors of domestic violence with family law services, immigrant survivors of domestic violence and their children are vulnerable to abuse because of language issues, lack of financial resources, fear of authority and law enforcement, and unfamiliarity with the American legal system.

SAFE bilingual legal advocates focus on providing legal assistance including drafting legal documents and legal representation in courts to domestic violence survivors with family law and immigration issues.  The assistance include obtaining restraining orders, child custody and support orders, divorce and paternity cases. SAFE also assists survivors gain legal status without relying on their abuser through the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) or the U-Visa, designed to help victims of crime.

SAFE provides monthly legal clinics and seminar/webinar to provide community education and services.

  • J.D. and must be an active member in good standing with the California State Bar within 7 months of hire date
  • Minimum of one (1) year of related family law experience; 3 years preferred
  • Bilingual or biliterate in at least one Asian language strongly preferred (Chinese, Korean, Thai, Tagalog, or Vietnamese)
  • Dedication to serving immigrant communities and a sincere commitment to working on behalf of low-income immigrants
  • Valid driver's license and/or access to alternative means of transportation


Under the direction of the Program Director, the Staff Attorney is responsible for coordinating and providing family law legal assistance, with a focus on serving domestic violence survivors. The SAFE Project focuses on assisting domestic violence survivors with family law matters, as well the indigent and limited-English proficient immigrant community. The pay range is between $60,724 to $86,532.  This position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Your day-to-day typically includes:

70% Client Support

  • Handle a variety of family law cases, including domestic violence restraining orders, dissolution of marriage cases, parentage cases, child custody and child support hearings, and other related family law matters  
  • Provide direct legal services to low-income clients in a variety of family law cases, including domestic violence restraining orders, dissolution, paternity, child custody/visitation, child support, spousal support, and other related family law matters  
  • Counsel and advise clients on their legal rights, prepare court forms and documents, draft declarations, and conduct legal research and writing including memorandum of points and authorities 
  • Provide court representation 

25% Community Education

  • Recruit, train, and mentor pro bono attorneys, law students, and other volunteers 
  • Coordinate client services with legal interns, legal assistant/advocate, pro bono attorneys and partner social service agencies 
  • Coordinate and conduct education and outreach presentations at community forums and trainings 
  • Develop and revise unit material including training manual and client brochures 
  • Conduct community legal clinics 

5% Other Duties as Assigned 

  • Produce periodic progress reports to funders 
  • All other duties as assigned
