Secondary Reporting Relationship: Fine Arts Director

Job Purpose: The Assistant Band Director shall prayerfully help students learn attitudes, skills, and subject matter that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible Christians to the praise and glory of God.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Teach multiple grade-level band classes in conjunction with the BACS Band Director, including: Beginner Band (5th grade), Advanced Beginner Band (6th grade), Junior High Band (7th-8th grades), and High School Band (9th-12th grades)

  • Assist with the Marching Band and the corresponding duties, as designated by the Band Director

  • Carry on the responsibilities/duties of the Band Director in the event of the Band Directors absence

  • Work in conjunction with the other members of the Fine Arts Department when necessary

Assist the Band Director in:

  • Operating a disciplined and organized classroom environment

  • Teaching small groups/individuals (when necessary)

  • Planning classroom lessons

  • Participating in parent conferences

  • Entering assignments/grades in RenWeb (online gradebook)

  • Preparing and administering playing/written tests and quizzes

  • Communicating with parents/administration by email

  • Organizing and maintaining music library, band hall, and music offices

  • Conducting auditions for students interested in joining Band at the end of the school year

  • Attending music related trips and performances

  • Budget planning

  • Preparing for performances and competitions

  • Setting up for Christmas and Spring Chapel performances

  • Helping students with music for contests, region auditions, and solo festivals

  • Attending concerts, competitions, and solo/ensemble contests, as needed

5th Grade Responsibilities:

  • Teach, demonstrate, and evaluate various instruments with beginners

  • Utilize method books and various teaching tools to conduct class

  • Demonstrate proper instrument care

6th Grade Responsibilities:

  • Provide 6th grade beginner band students with supplemental instruction and support, as needed

  • Prepare students for region auditions, concerts, festivals, and other performances

Junior High Responsibilities:

  • Teach 7th and 8th grade students both separately and together as a group, as needed

  • Prepare students for region auditions, concerts, festivals, and other performances

High School Responsibilities:

  • Teach concert band and marching band

  • Attend summer marching band camp

  • Lead and instruct marching band in preparation for performances

  • Attend home football games and occasional away games

  • Attend state marching festival, as needed

Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Desire to equip and encourage students to skillfully use their gifts and creative abilities for Kingdom purposes

  • Effective communication skills

  • Knowledge and demonstrated competency in the subject(s) assigned

  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior

  • Openness to change and innovation to meet the needs of all students

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Prior experience teaching in a public or private setting preferred

  • Prior experience playing in a High School or College ensemble preferred

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   1. Physical Activities - Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

  2. Employee is regularly required to use their hands and fingers, to include: hands to finger; handle; feel; grasp; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to use repetitive motion such as substantial motions of the wrists, hands, and or fingers.

  3. Talking the employee will be required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  4. Hearing - the employee will be required to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Employee will need to possess the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound. Employee is subject to noise sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.

  5. Seeing - Visual requirements include close visual acuity to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data, and visual inspection involving small parts.

  6. Conditions - The employee is subject to environmental conditions including temperature changes. Activities occur both inside and outside, including extreme heat and temperatures above 100 degrees for more than one hour, humidity, and wind. The employee is subject to vibrations including oscillating movements. The employee is subject to ambient noise levels.
