POSITION SUMMARY:
The position of Procurement Surgeon with the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) serves as the primary procurement surgeon to perform abdominal organ procurements and to enhance the efforts of CORE in its primary goal of procuring organs, tissue, and corneas for transplantation and research throughout COREs service area. The Procurement Surgeon serves as a key ambassador for donation by modeling and controlling the intraoperative behavior of all recovery team members. The Procurement Surgeon shall be responsible for clinical evaluation and management of potential and consented organ donors and for implementing and monitoring all clinical policies, programs and services. The Procurement Surgeon may serve as Asst. Medical Director.
Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, and ultimately the Chief Executive Officer, the Procurement Surgeon is a licensed physician with experience in organ donation, surgical organ recovery, and organ transplantation, and surgically recovers deceased donor organs for transplantation and research.
The Procurement Surgeon shall provide clinical leadership throughout the donation process and medical management of potential donors by supporting the staff of CORE. The Procurement Surgeon is given a broad range of authority to deal with the clinical and administrative aspects necessary to provide for a successful outcome of the donation process.
The Procurement Surgeon will report to the Chief Operating Officer for daily donation-related issues that arise and will ultimately report to the President/CEO report to the full CORE Board of Directors at scheduled meetings for issues that need Board attention and approval.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform surgical organ recovery to local and national standards for organ transplantation. Serves as the primary procurement surgeon for abdominal organs.
- Maintain on-going knowledge, and actively involved in the development/revision and implementation of UNOS and CORE policies/protocols and procedures concerning the testing (evaluation for suitability& donor management), recovery and placement of postmortem organs.
- Advises staff regarding the safety and suitability of donor organs and communicates with transplant centers as necessary to discuss potential issues in organ offers.
- Assist with regulatory oversight with Medicare, UNOS, FDA, OSHA, and CDC.
- Attend CORE Advisory Board (Transplant and Medical Advisory) Board Meetings as needed.
- Works with the COO, Medical Director, and local transplant program directors to develop a standards and performance measures for surgical procurement of abdominal organs.
- Attend Organ Donor Guidance Committees at donor hospitals on an ad-hoc basis and work with teams at these hospitals on innovative ways to enhance donation.
- Is available to provide assistance, when requested (either on-site or via consultation) to the CORE staff to evaluate and maintain potential organ donors. This may include assistance when needed with donor management, determination of donor suitability for donation and organ recovery, and placement in high risk cases.
- Interact with Medical Examiners/Coroners and referring physicians to facilitate the donation process.
- Evaluate, recommend and complete research programs or projects.
- Arbitrate transplant team related difficulties when necessary.
- Aid in the training of CORE staff in the evaluation and medical management aspects of the donation process.
- Attend annual meetings of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO).
- Aid in the development and oversight of quality control and quality assurance programs within CORE.
- Participate in Corrective Action and Preventative Action (CAPA) investigations and follow up with families and physicians when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
(a) MD or DO with at least 3 years experience in transplant surgery, or
(b) MD or DO with at least three years experience in transplant medicine, or
(c) MD or DO with at least three years experience in critical care, including experience in the medical management of organ donors.
(d) Current PA or WV medical license, DEA number, and evidence of malpractice insurance coverage.
(e) Excellent written and verbal communication skills and sound analytical skills.
DEGREE OF JOB DIFFICULTY
The Procurement Surgeon shall provide clinical leadership throughout the donation process and medical management of potential donors by supporting the staff of CORE. The Procurement Surgeon is given a broad range of authority to deal with the clinical and administrative aspects necessary to provide for a successful outcome of the donation process. The degree of difficulty falls into the difficult range. Inadvertent errors or mistakes could have an adverse effect and possibly result in the death of a transplant recipient. Personal development is essential to keep abreast of the current trends in organ, tissue and eye donation, transplantation and distribution. Misinformation could cause internal and external problems with regard to CORE, EBAA, AATB and FDA policies and guidelines.
