Job Description

The Alley Theatre seeks a major gift officer to join our team in achieving the major gift fundraising program objectives. The goal of the Major Gifts program is to provide a donor base of individuals who support the Alley with gifts of $10,000 and above. These gifts will help fund important programs, solidify the Alley’s financial base and enable transformational growth, and expansion of the Alley’s work. The Major Gifts Officer will help manage and maintain the major gifts program. This person will play a significant role in developing cultivation and stewardship strategies to secure and increase gifts from current donors and prospects. These prospects will include subscribers, single ticket buyers and non-subscribers.


Job Duties:

  • Have a strong understanding of the moves management system.
  • Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of 50-60 individual donors and prospects
  • Secure major gifts at the $10,000 and above level with the goal of raising $500,000 annually.
  • Work independently and in tandem with Director of Individual Giving and Research Analyst to identify and qualify major gift donors and prospects and recommend cultivation and stewardship strategies to convert each prospect into a major donor.
  • Conduct in-depth research related to each donor and prospect to strengthen and guide the Alley’s relationship with each major donor.
  • Form a strong knowledge base of all donors and prospects within the major gifts portfolio.
  • Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including the donor database and wealth screening tools.
  • Create reports that accurately track portfolio activity and performance.
  • Call and email major gift donors on a regular basis.
  • Work evening and weekend patron events with the intent to build relationships with Alley Theatre donors and prospects. Events include mingling with donors in the private donor lounge, Artistic Director’s Circle events, Center Stage dinners, Insider Patron events, opening nights and rehearsals.
  • Assist during Alley Theatre’s major special events such as annual ball.


In addition to the duties listed above, the Alley Theatre expects the following of each employee:  adheres to Theatre’s policies and procedures; works in a safe manner;  performs duties as workload necessitates; maintains a positive and respectful attitude; communicates regularly with supervisor about department issues; demonstrates efficient time management and prioritizes workload; demonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality; meets department productivity standards; participates in Alley Theatre events as needed or required; and completes other duties as assigned.



  • Be an active participant in a team-based fundraising department and provide additional assistance to other development staff members when required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in fundraising within the non-profit sector including direct solicitation experience (non-event related), as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrable ability to prepare and present both formal written and oral presentations.
  • Requires strong collaboration skills in order to work effectively across the department and organization.
  • Function consistently as a highly valued and high performing team player within the Development department and the organization.
  • A demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of individual giving fundraising principles (i.e. identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship).
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to respond rather than react to guidance and direction.
  • Flexibility to work patron and special events that occur on the evenings and weekends
  • Bachelor's Degree required.

Reports To: Director of Development

Status: Full Time Salary-Exempt

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
Schedule: Weekdays with some evenings and weekends
