DevOps Engineer

The American Printing House for the Blind (APH), a world leader in creating learning solutions and pathways to success for children and adults who are blind or visually impaired is seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer. Reporting to the Director of Global Technology Innovations, this position will help build functional systems that improve customer experience. The DevOps Engineer will also be responsible for deploying product updates, identifying production issues, and implementing integrations that meet our customers' needs.
This is a remote position. The successful candidate will be required to attend onsite meetings as needed.


Building and setting up new development tools and infrastructure
Understanding the needs of stakeholders and conveying this to developers
Working on ways to automate and improve development and release processes
Testing and examining code written by others and analyzing results
Ensuring that systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats
Identifying technical problems and developing software updates and fixes
Working with software developers and software engineers to ensure that development follows established processes and works as intended
Planning out projects and being involved in project management decisions
Knowledge sharing through documentation and training sessions of process and procedures with members of the team


Provide Level 2 technical support
Build tools to reduce occurrences of errors and improve customer experience
Develop software to integrate with internal back-end systems
Perform root cause analysis for production errors
Investigate and resolve technical issues
Develop scripts to automate visualization
Design procedures for system troubleshooting and maintenance

Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant field
3-5 years experience as a DevOps Engineer or similar software engineering role
Proficient with git and git workflows
Good knowledge of Ruby or Python
Working knowledge of databases and SQL
Experience with running/ maintaining / upgrading gitlab/Redmine servers
Excellent problem solving skills, self-motivated, able to work efficiently independently and in a team environment
Ability to deliver high-quality and accessible technical documentation
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and make them easily understandable in text and pictures
Ability to assist the Software Development team with current software
Collaborative team spirit


Bachelors degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent work experience
Experience with software engineering and customer experience
2+ years experience in Linux development, preferably in embedded contexts
Experience with Agile methodologies
At least 3 years coding/scripting JAVA, JavaScript and HTML
Strong understanding of web and their related infrastructure technologies (load balancers, DNS, IIS or Apache/WebSphere, authentication and authorization, database connections, etc.)
Working knowledge of mainframe architecture is a plus
Experience implementing or managing Application Monitoring, Splunk, or Docker
Experience developing engineering applications for a large corporation
