The Shady Side Academy Communications Office seeks an experienced, highly organized, collaborative communications professional to join our close-knit team, which is dedicated to telling stories that illustrate Shady Side Academy’s unique value, and to keeping parents, students, faculty, staff and alumni informed and engaged in the life of the school. The Associate Director of Communications is a full-time, in-person, 12-month position that reports to the Chief Communications Officer and is part of a team that includes the Web & Social Media Manager and Visual Media Manager.


  • Serves as chief editor of Shady Side Academy Magazine, leading the editorial strategy and coordinating the production of two issues per year. Assigns feature stories and articles to freelance and in-house contributors; writes features and articles; edits submissions from others; coordinates in-house and freelance photography; works with external graphic designer, printer and mailhouse to coordinate layout, printing and mailing.
  • Serves as editor and writer of a new quarterly faculty/staff e-newsletter
  • Writes and edits compelling stories and copy for magazines, newsletters, websites, blogs and press releases.
  • Serves as a “beat reporter” for one of SSA’s four campuses, proactively seeking out stories and content that illustrate SSA’s core strategy, mission and brand
  • Manages publication projects from inception to completion, working collaboratively with various internal departments and staff, including marketing
  • Designs and prints in-house invitations, programs, flyers, handbooks and other smaller projects; works with external designers as needed on larger projects
  • Manages relationships with external printing vendors
  • Manages Academy stationery, business card and name tag orders
  • Ensures consistency in voice and message in all communications, as well as adherence to AP Style and SSA’s brand identity standards.
  • Covers school events as assigned, writing recap stories and/or taking photos when needed
  • Serves in a backup and supporting role to the Chief Communications Officer on the Incident Command Team


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field
  • 5-10 years of experience in writing, editing, publication and project management; experience in an educational or nonprofit setting preferred
  • Exceptional writing, editing, storytelling and proofreading skills; knowledge of AP Style
  • Outstanding organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Solid design and creative skills
  • Experience working with graphic designers, photographers, printers and other vendors
  • Proficiency in Apple/Mac platform, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Adobe Creative Suite and Canva
  • Collaborative team player with a sense of humor and a passion for education and children
