About the Senator John Heinz History Center

The Senator John Heinz History Center is a Smithsonian-affiliated museum and a first-day Pittsburgh attraction that presents compelling stories from American history with a Western Pennsylvania connection, all in an interactive and engaging environment for visitors of all ages.  The largest history museum in Pennsylvania, the AAM-accredited History Center attracts large and diverse audiences to its 370,000-square-foot facility in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District that includes six floors of long-term and changing exhibition space along with spectacular spaces for special events.

 

The History Center’s family of museums includes the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, a dynamic museum-within-a-museum; the Fort Pitt Museum in Point State Park; and Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village, a National Historic Landmark located in Avella, Washington County, Pa. The History Center also leads a partnership of more than 125 regional historical societies, museums, and organizations dedicated to preserving local history – the History Center Affiliates Program.

The Senator John Heinz History Center— Pittsburgh’s oldest cultural institution (1879), the largest history museum in Pennsylvania, and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution—seeks a dynamic and experienced Director of Technology.

The Director of Technology leads information technology and digital services at all Heinz History Center locations. The Director will work with senior management to improve efficiency and achieve the strategic goals of the organization using integrated technological resources. The Director will assist all departments with technical expertise in developing new opportunities for all areas of technology and assist in selecting technology resources.

The Director of Technology will oversee strategic and operational technology planning; procurement, installation, and maintenance of all technology; tracking and reporting of technology project progress; adherence to technology policies and procedures; and all major technology initiatives that require hardware, software, and communications platforms with History Center staff. The Technology team is tasked with serving as an advisor to management on technologies that improve efficiency and effectiveness; leading the long-term strategic advancement of the History Center’s technology capacity; maximizing the effectiveness and reducing the cost of technology; keeping abreast of new technologies, trends, and project management techniques; ensuring the smooth operation of the History Center’s information system network; and providing ongoing training for all staff in the use of History Center hardware and software.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position reporting to the Vice President &CFO, working closely with all senior staff. This position supervises a Digital Solutions Manager and a Technology Manager.  The team also includes a Technical Support Specialist reporting to the Technology Manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in a relevant area, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of ten years of experience or equivalent in a technical area is required, with at least five years of management experience. Proven experience in technology planning, organization, and development. Demonstrated ability to apply technology in solving business problems.
  • Minimum of three years of project management experience. Excellent understanding of project management principles and managing cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of business, technology, and financial management solutions.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
  • Strong negotiating skills.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Mature leadership that understands the value of being part of a team.
  • The ability to accommodate a variety of work styles, areas of expertise, and technical experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a clear and effective communicator.
  • Strong organizational abilities, including prioritizing attention to detail for self and staff, planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
  • Problem solver who remains calm under pressure.
  • Strong data management and analysis skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings as required and be part of a weekend on-call schedule.
  • Relevant certification or degree in project management

Additional qualifications (preferred but not required)

  • Experience in a museum, cultural institution, educational, or non-profit environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Southwestern Pennsylvania region corporate and technology communities
