Description

The Preservation Specialist is responsible for procurement activities related to the surgical removal, preservation, and distribution of organs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

DONOR COORDINATION AND ORGAN RECOVERY

1. Maintains an on-call schedule of approximately twelve to fifteen 24-hour call days per month (50% call).

2. Strong working knowledge of operating room etiquette and sterile technique.

3. Ability to coordinate the organ recovery process, make appropriate decisions and effectively communicate with appropriate parties.

4. Ability to recognize and identify normal anatomy.

5. Ability to flush, package and label all organs according to policies and procedures.

6. Basic knowledge of donor management and assist with management of the donor in the operating room.

7. Basic knowledge of federal, state and industry laws/regulations related to organ recovery including OPTN, CMS, and OSHA.

8. Ability to place kidneys on, and remove them from, the pump with minimal oversight.

9. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal MTN staff, hospital staff, transplant center partners, and others involved in the donation process.

10. Ability to conduct appropriate face-to-face interactions with donor families, if needed.

11. Serves as resource to recovery surgeons on SOPs and recovery protocols.

12. Assists surgeon with surgical recovery as needed.

13. Participation in organ import process.

14. Provides surgical support to transplant centers as needed in the living donation process.

15. Assists with Tissue recovery when needed.

16. Completion of QA and QI processes as required by MTN Policies and Procedures.

17. Conducts post donor follow-up with hospitals, transplant centers, and donor families as needed.

18. Maintenance of donation information in MTN database and UNET.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Undergraduate degree in Biological Science, Nursing, P.A., or Allied Health or equivalent experience required. Otherwise, two to three years’ experience in organ and tissue procurement.

2. OR process knowledge and excellent knowledge of sterilization techniques.

3. Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week and participate in 24-hour call. Must be available on non-call days during normal business hours. Required to work for extended periods of time with few breaks.

4. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy. Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.

5. Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.

6. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.

7. Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and surgical equipment.

8. Ability to speak and communicate clearly in order to accurately convey information to donor families, hospital staff and transplant/procurement personnel in person or by phone.

9. OSHA Category I Exposed regularly to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties. Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.

10. Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
