The Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Commercial Lines (CL) Supervisor is responsible for a full range of activities which ensure the operational effectiveness of the CL SBU area.  This individual will act as the primary liaison between the various business units, vendors, and the application/system development teams.  They will be responsible for assigning and managing project tasks from the initiation, development, testing, implementation and post-project validation phases of a project. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership needed to instill a team-oriented, client-driven team
  • Coaches and develops employees
  • Collaborates with all functional business units within organization to achieve strategic, tactical and project goals
  • Consults with business areas to determine specific functional and technical requirements for new applications or system enhancements
  • Coordinates personnel to assist in project initiation, development, testing, implementation and validation of new functions and applications
  • Develops and maintains effective reporting tools for the SBU
  • Ensures that all system testing is conducted and documented according the standards agreed upon by the business unit and IT
  • Proactively assists with the identification of training and development requirements within the various business units, the agency force and the SBU
  • Assists in the design and implementation of training and development initiatives
  • Works directly with personnel in the CL business unit to help develop project concept, objectives and approach
  • Works directly with personnel in the CL unit to help develop tactical and strategic products, services and/or programs to support the business unit’s goals (financial, quality, operational efficiency, etc.)
  • Works closely with business unit personnel and business partners to identify and maximize opportunities to use information and technology to improve product, service and/or business processes
  • Works directly with personnel in the business unit(s) to develop requirement studies for the automation of new lines of business or enhancements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required to Perform Job:

  • Resource management abilities – emphasizing customer focus and relationship building
  • Proven project management and leadership skills, including the ability to gather clear business requirements
  • Proven ability to develop, document and maintain operational policies and procedures, including the designing and documenting detailed process flows
  • Strong knowledge of P&C insurance including a detailed understanding of Commercial Lines rating and underwriting concepts
  • Ability to interpret rating manuals, rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of billing processes within an insurance organization
  • Experience in: requirements gathering, identifying gaps, estimating, implementation, test planning and execution, and User Acceptance Testing definition and execution/ translating requirements and use cases into test conditions and expected results for assembly, product, and user acceptance testing
  • Knowledge of Duck Creek Policy Processing System
  • Knowledge of major billing system applications utilized in a P&C insurance environment (i.e. Guidewire, Duck Creek, etc.) 
  • Knowledge of automation testing tools
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications; specifically; Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of MS Project (or equivalent project management tool)
  • Proven problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; provides clear instructions to others

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field preferred (equivalent work experience considered)
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in CL Property and Casualty insurance industry
  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory and project management experience
  • Experience with CL underwriting software applications and web-based CL underwriting systems
