Position Summary:

The summer instructors at CIMI are responsible for providing support to summer camp programs for children who are age 8-17.  Support primarily includes instruction of camp activities including archery, high ropes, kayaking, snorkeling, and tubing but includes secondary duties as assigned.  All activities are conducted according to CIMI and ACA-approved protocols to ensure the delivery of a high-quality program. The summer instructors have the responsibility to provide quality instruction and leadership during a range of summer camp activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  1. Ensure all programs are conducted in accordance with the policies set by CIMI, emphasizing safety. 
  2. Development of necessary educational and instructional background to ensure the quality of the program. 
  3. Teach campers in marine labs as well as take them kayaking and snorkeling according to all safety guidelines.
  4. Assume duties of Dive-Locker Coordinator when assigned. 
  5. Participate in training week scheduled and instructed by the Program Director. 
  6. Drive program boats when assigned for mail runs and town runs. 
  7. Greet incoming groups to the facility. 
  8. Work evening duties as required to meet the group’s needs. 
  9. Generate ongoing enthusiasm and participation in student activities.
  10. Other duties assigned by the Program Director. 

Other Responsibilities/Supportive Functions:

  1. Must be able to communicate and work with the cabin groups by instructing
  2. in hikes, water activities, at archery, and on the high ropes elements.
  3. Ability to snorkel 1/2 mile in the ocean, leading 15 campers for up to 2 hours. 
  4. Hike up to 2 miles along dirt trails including steep inclines. 
  5. Lift kayaks and carry to water with campers. 
  6. Drive chase boat during kayaking once trained and cleared. 
  7. Greet incoming groups at the pier and help move luggage. 
  8. Lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs. when necessary. 
  9. Be able to respond to emergency situations by providing the leadership necessary to enact the Emergency Procedure Plan. 
  10. Ability to observe student and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior.

The employee member is subject to environmental conditions found working indoors/outdoors. The employee member is frequently subject to extreme heat, with temperatures up to 110 degrees while moving around in and outside of camp. The employee member is frequently subject to loud noise when working in or around the camp. The employee member is subject to hazards which include proximity to moving mechanical parts, equipment found in kitchens and food service areas, sharp objects, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and animals. Other hazards may include slick floors and hot stoves, cookware, plate ware or glassware. The employee member is occasionally subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, or dust.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must be at least 21 years old.
  2. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  3. Prior teaching experience or equivalent (in outdoor science programs, or in youth summer camps, scouts programs or recreational programs for youth preferred.)
  4. Snorkeling experience necessary.  SCUBA certification is not necessary.  Must be a strong swimmer. 
  5. Physically fit in order to snorkel, kayak, and hike for extended periods.
  6. Must be able to pass the Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding Course including first aid and CPR. 
  7. Have a desire to live and work in a remote camp community. 
  8. Have a desire to work with children and the ability to supervise them. 
  9. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activities.
  10. Good character, integrity, flexibility, and adaptability. 
  11. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control.
