REPORTS TO: CONTROLLER

STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT, SALARIED

 

Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full-time position of  The staff accountant assists the controller in all aspects of maintaining the general ledger and financial reporting, as well as assisting in carrying out the mission of the College as established by the president and the board of directors.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

General ledger:

  • Maintains the general ledger by coordinating, preparing, and entering journal entries. 
  • Corrects and performs miscellaneous entries. 
  • Reviews and records endowment and investment activities, including pooled annuities and assets held in trust by others. 
  • Works with Institutional Advancement on recording gifts to appropriate budgets
  • Records credit card activity to the general ledger
  • Works with Business Office coordinator to properly record the mailroom billable activities. 

Budgets:

  • Reviews account coding and funds availability for various unrestricted, designated and restricted accounts, grants and contracts. 
  • Monitors activity to ensure the College is compliant in expending restricted funds. 
  • Makes any necessary budget adjustments or reclassifications that affect institutional budgets. 
  • Provides the controller with regular departmental budget status updates. 

Reconciliation:

  • Assists the controller with the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts. 
  • Assists the controller with various income and expense reconciliations. 
  • Reconciles student loan activity (Perkins & institutional). 
  • Ensures payroll withholding and related liability and clearing accounts are reconciled. 
  • Assists the controller with the reconciliation of the financial module & federal funding to the general ledger. 

Reports:

  • Schell loan program cash flow. 
  • Federal authorization funding & expenditure levels (CWS / SEOG / Perkins). 
  • Prepares annual FISAP financial sections.

 

  • Other duties will be assigned by the Controller or the President

Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or related field. 
  • Five or more years of professional accounting experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as across academic and administrative departments.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and excellent skill with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience in educational/not-for-profit fund accounting.
  • Experience with Jenzabar EX software system.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as across academic and administrative departments.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and excellent skill with Microsoft Excel.
