Description

Trinity Episcopal School is seeking a School Chaplain for the 2024-25 academic year. As a member of the senior administrative team and reporting directly to the Head of School, the School Chaplain plays an instrumental role in creating and maintaining a community that is an expression of God’s love, caring, and nurturing of all of God’s children. The School Chaplain tends to the spiritual life of the school and provides leadership in planning and delivering the liturgical life, faith studies classes, pastoral care, the service-learning program, and equity, justice, and belonging initiatives. The School Chaplain serves as an ambassador for the School’s Episcopal Identity, which focuses on supporting every child’s spiritual journey, fostering a sense of belonging in an inclusive school community, and instilling a love of neighbor focused on equity and justice. The School Chaplain leads the chaplain team, which includes a full-time lower school chaplain and a full-time music chaplain. Trinity is an independent Episcopal school that is committed to the principles of Episcopal schools expressed in worship, religious formation, community life, and a dedication to the ideals of justice and equity.

Essential Responsibilities:
Leadership

Tend to the spiritual life of the school by:

  • creating and maintaining a community that is an expression of God’s love and lives the example of Christ, building relationships with the various array of constituents is an essential component of this role

  • identifying opportunities to enhance the spiritual development of the students and faculty from a variety of religious backgrounds

  • assisting in building a community of spirituality that lives into the tenets of our honor code

Plan and lead the liturgical life by:

  • identifying topics and themes for community chapels with consideration to the church calendar, school calendar/service learning, and the holidays of other faith traditions in conjunction with the other chaplains and the Head of School

  • organizing and/or preparing homilies and chapel talks that are delivered by a variety of community members, including all chaplains and guest speakers

  • providing support to chaplains in delivering grade-level chapels

Teach Faith Studies classes by:

  • implementing and mapping a K-8 faith studies curriculum in conjunction with the chaplain team and division heads

  • teaching at least one grade level of faith studies classes in both the Lower School and Middle School

Provide and organize pastoral care by:

  • working with the chaplain team, school counselor, Head of School, and division heads to care for the needs of students, families, faculty, and staff of the School

  • leading the Community Life Committee of faculty and staff

Lead service-learning initiatives by:

  • working with the other chaplains to ensure students in each grade level are engaged in regular, appropriate, and meaningful service-learning experiences connected with our grade-level partners

  • organizing service efforts and projects

Lead the equity & belonging work by:

  • working with the Director of Diversity, Equity & Belonging and the Head of School in leading the work focused on educating faculty, staff, students, and parents, on leveraging the benefits of living in a diverse community, and on helping each person feel welcomed as a child of God

  • focusing the chaplain team on this important core value as part of their work

Management/Administration

  • Staff Development and Improvement In conjunction with the division heads, promote professional development and improvement by setting goals for each member of the chaplain team and planning for appropriate professional development

  • Evaluation and Retention of Staff Work with the division heads and assist in the evaluation process for all members of the chaplain team

  • Morale Create an atmosphere of professionalism and respect by promoting positive interaction within the chaplain team and among all colleagues

Other

  • Other duties may be assigned by the Head of School.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualities:

  • Familiarity with and a commitment to the mission of independent schools and Trinity Episcopal School, and a commitment to our three primary values of scholarship, diversity, and spirituality is a must

  • A love for students and a willingness to go above and beyond in the best interests of students

  • Integrity, sound judgment, self-confidence, maturity and a sense of perspective

  • A high level of energy and ability to work on multiple tasks/projects

  • Ability to model, promote, and provide opportunities for students to live into the Trinity Honor Code

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds

Education and Work Experience

  • Master’s Degree

  • Ordained member of the Episcopal Church

  • Strong preaching and pastoral skills

Skills and Qualifications

  • Episcopal Priest

  • Experience leading worship

  • Demonstrated experience working with youth

  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, writing, organizational, and communication skills
