The following list of major duties and responsibilities does not necessarily represent any one 
job. It is the compilation of the diversity of job duties fulfilled by many people who have a 
job title similar to that of Custodian. It is not an expectation that any one person necessarily 
fulfills all of these duties. It is also recognized that there may be elements of a job which are 
not included in this checklist. Parishes are encouraged to create individual job descriptions, 
using this checklist as a normative guideline in this effort.


I. POSITION PURPOSE


 A. Provides cleaning and light maintenance for the parish buildings and grounds.


II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


A. Assures the church, school and other parish buildings are maintained in a clean and 
orderly manner including dust mopping and/or vacuuming floors, cleaning 
bathrooms, and washing windows.
B. Maintains wood furnishings which require oiling and maintenance.
C. Assures the parish grounds are maintained in a clean and safe manner including 
mowing, watering and edging lawns, blowing walkways, weeding, pruning and raking 
on a seasonal basis. 
D. Maintains playground in a safe and clean manner. 
E. Performs minor maintenance on the school, rectory or church including light 
carpentry work and minor repair work on the facilities as needed.
F. Provides other general assistance as needed through setting up the chairs, tables in 
the parish and school facilities as requested, hauling moving items and picking up 
parts or other equipment as requested by staff.
G. Assures the collection and disposal of garbage.
H. Serves as a member of the Parish Safety Committee.
I. Maintains an inventory of supplies for lighting and cleaning and orders supplies as 
requested.
J. Maintains a level of knowledge and skills required to function as a Custodian. This is 
accomplished through reading appropriate materials and attending appropriate 
workshops or participating in other training opportunities

I. POSITION PURPOSE


 A. Provides cleaning and light maintenance for the parish buildings and grounds. Keeps the parish buildings and grounds clean and attractive to provide a suitable environment for staff, parishioners, and visitors/guests and to enhance the image of the parish.


II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The custodian collaborates in developing the cleaning schedule to assure parish buildings and grounds are maintained in an orderly manner.
  • Assures the church, offices (the Rectory); social hall and other parish facilities are maintained in a clean and orderly manner including dusting; mopping, vacuuming and polishing floors; cleaning bathrooms; filling paper dispensers; washing windows; light repairs, painting, and changing furnace filters.
  • Manages church heating schedule and filter changes for HVAC systems.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies, record of supply usage and request for orders.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly workspace, supply, and equipment storage.
  • Maintains Safety Data Sheets for items within job function
  • Secures buildings when not in use during assigned hours.
  • Set-up and takes down tables and chairs to support scheduled and non-scheduled events in the social hall, hospitality area of the church, and in the “Rectory” parish office building.
  • Assures the parish grounds, walkways and roadways are clean and safe, including mowing, watering, and edging lawns, blowing walkways, weeding, pruning, and raking on a seasonal or as needed basis.
  • Provides other general assistance as needed or requested such as hauling items, moving items, and picking up parts or other equipment as requested by the facility manager.
  • Assures the collection and disposal of garbage and recycling.
  • Maintains a level of knowledge and skills required to function as a custodian. This is accomplished through reading appropriate materials and attending appropriate workshops or participating in other training opportunities.

Job Qualifications

  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors and indoors, climb ladders, frequently stand/walk/sit/carry/reach/grasp/climb, talk and hear.
  • Experience with computerized control of HVAC system
  • Basic Computer skills
  • Maintains a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
    • Assures that if operating a personal vehicle in the performance of duties outlined that such vehicle has vehicle insurance in compliance with Washington State Regulations and Archdiocesan Guidelines. (Automobile Insurance /Driving Eligibility
    • HR 16. Employees who drive as part of their responsibility in performing parish business are required to purchase and maintain collision and bodily injury/property damage auto insurance at the minimum level established by the State of Washington and to have a driver’s license valid for operating a motor vehicle in the State of Washington (see Manager’s Toolkit: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/HR). Must also be cleared to drive every three years via the background check process.
