Job Description

The Senior Director of Advancement is responsible for AFTD's fundraising, events, marketing, and branding strategies to ensure the sustainability of the organization. The Senior Director of Advancement is a member of AFTD’s Executive Team, and champions engagement within AFTD’s passionate and growing rare disease community. This role focuses on boosting national and global visibility of both the organization and the disease and generating resources to sustain and advance AFTD’s mission. This high-profile position calls for nurturing strategic relationships, cultivating and stewarding donors, and collaborating closely with the CEO and Board of Directors. The Senior Director of Advancement effectively manages and develops Directors and teams across development, events, and marketing and communications to engage current and new supporters, implement a broad and sustainable fundraising program, and deliver a powerful and cohesive marketing, communications, and public relations effort to expand the organization’s reach and impact.

 

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

Advancement - Strategy:

In consultation with the CEO and Board of Directors, and in collaboration with staff colleagues:

  • Devise a dynamic roadmap for the development of philanthropic as well as non-philanthropic revenue streams that accomplish organizational sustainability

  • Provide strategic vision for and lead crafting of a cohesive messaging, branding, and community engagement strategy that is aligned with AFTD's core values and objectives

  • Identify resources necessary to ensure the success of the identified strategy and plans

  • Regularly assess AFTD’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and align strategies accordingly.

Advancement - Delivery:

  • Oversee and guide the execution of fundraising, marketing, and communication plans, focusing on donor development and retention, brand visibility, and community growth

  • Create and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that there are robust systems in place for quality control and quality assurance

  • Manage relationships with external vendors who work alongside the Advancement team

  • Collaborate with the COO and senior staff to refine CRM, website, and IT systems to ensure effectiveness and efficiencies in pursuit of optimal community engagement

  • Implement project management best practices, monitor program performance, and address potential setbacks in coordination with AFTD’s leadership

Relationship Building:

  • Foster and steward relationships with key donors, partners, and prospects

  • Partner with the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships and the senior team to understand and strengthen key strategic relationships and collaborations

  • Actively seek information and build relationships that ensure understanding of the environment within which AFTD is operating and ensure identification of new influences or trends as they emerge

  • Partner with senior team colleagues to ensure work is efficiently integrated across the mission, and to foster high-performing teams, trust, collaboration, and transparency throughout AFTD

Departmental Leadership:

  • Provide unwavering leadership to AFTD’s Advancement team, overseeing budgeting, planning, and staff development

  • Ensure the team's accountability to timelines, deliverables, and metrics

  • Champion a culture of high performance, continuous learning, and collaboration

  • Lead with an emphasis on empowerment, coaching and mentoring, and psychological safety within teams

  • Serve as a mentor, enhancing team performance and professional growth

  • Advocate for process and system improvements, leveraging data-driven insights and digital solutions to heighten efficiency and impact

Other Job Functions

  • As a member of AFTD’s leadership team, contribute expert knowledge in support of quality decisions regarding internal planning and AFTD’s overall strategic direction

  • Represent AFTD externally, staying informed on national-level (and, in defined instances, global) activities in the dementia space, taking speaking engagements and representing AFTD and FTD on external committees as appropriate; and collaborate with internal teams to ensure AFTD is presenting a coordinated/unified persona, representing our values, and priorities to the external world

  • Conscientiously follows company policies and practices and takes care of organizational property

  • Travel for organizational meetings and events as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position has supervisory responsibilities for the following roles:

o Director of Marketing and Communications

o Development Director

o Events Director

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role:

 

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s, equivalent advanced degree, or equivalent experience preferred. CFRE is a plus.

 

Experience

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible development and marketing and communications management experience, preferably in healthcare or advocacy, with a demonstrated track record of success.

  • Demonstrated experience effectively managing Director-level staff

  • Demonstrated experience managing a department with a broad range of responsibilities and work styles

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong, current working knowledge of nonprofit organizations and the community impacted by neurodegenerative or rare diseases

  • Proven ability to develop and retain relationships, create networks, and influence others

  • Proven ability to increase awareness and philanthropic as well as non-philanthropic income

  • Proven ability to develop talent at the Director level and high-performing teams

  • A strong, strategic leader with deep critical thinking and structured problem-solving/analysis skills with the ability to develop frameworks for evaluating and recommending cross-functional options and solutions

  • Demonstrated business acumen, especially in setting priorities, creating efficiencies, leveraging opportunities, and developing plans to define and achieve success

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, along with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels in various fields online, by phone, and in person

  • Exceptional presentation skills, relating to and engaging with various audiences and stakeholders

  • Proven ability to handle issues confidentially and to be discrete and equitable

  • Strong attention to detail, quality assurance and control, experience implementing and managing a culture of continuous improvement

  • Proficient in full Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Excellent skills in and comfort utilizing web-video platforms, e.g., Zoom

  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible to work on a wide variety of projects; lending support where needed

  • Ability to approach work with a pleasant and professional demeanor

  • A good sense of humor is a strong plus

Location

AFTD maintains a hybrid work environment offering up to three days of remote work possible and two in the King of Prussia, PA Office. Arrangements for this specific position are negotiable.

 

Travel

  • Approximately 20%

  • Domestic and international air travel - US passport required; Ability to drive to meeting locations - Valid driver’s license required
