Job Summary

Under the direction of the Warehouse Lead or Warehouse Operations Mgr./Supervisor, the Material Handling Operator is responsible for operating material handling equipment for the purpose of moving, locating, relocating, stacking, clamping, and slipping merchandise: for the accurate receiving, storing, picking, and shipping of product to meet Inland Star standards of safety, security, and productivity. Filling customer orders and delivering them to the staging area in a manner of completeness and correctness.
 

Essential Functions:

Demonstrate the following skill-sets and industry knowledge:

  • Receiving - Unload inbound shipments safely & efficiently to staging area.
  • Put-Away - Use locator system to assist in putting product away to ensure space utilization, choose proper equipment to neatly stack product.
  • Order Picking - Pick orders for shipment by utilizing locator system. Pull, prepare and stage product for shipment, ensuring that the exact item #, lot #, description, size and amount are staged. Report any products that are not in location. Perform picking duties in an efficient manner that meets the Customer's needs.
  • Loading - Efficiently move product from staging and/or storage area into rail cars or trailers ensuring that correct product is loaded.
  • Cycle Counting- Participate in product cycle counts performing the counts and checking the counts of others.
  • Equipment - Load, unload, move, stack and stage product and materials using a fork lift, pallet jack, order picker, clamp-truck, push-pull unit, and other fork lift attachments. Maintain the facility's equipment and materials in a neat, clean and orderly fashion. On a daily basis, inspect fork lift and/or other equipment. Operate all equipment in a safe and efficient manner following prescribed work methods.
  • RF Bar Code Scanner- Demonstrate competence is using the RF Bar code scanner to receive, put away, pick, and ship products. This task requires 100% accuracy to successfully perform the job duties.
  • Safety, Sanitation, Security - Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly work area. Assist in maintaining the security of the warehouse. Conduct operations in a manner which promotes safety.
  • Character: Honesty, trust, and open-mindedness.
  • Professionalism: Must demonstrate a willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
  • Continuous Improvement: Look for ways to improve your department. Offer written suggestions.
  • Personal growth and development: Demonstrate initiative in developing your job skills and commit to participate in an inhouse job training program
  • Performance: Must perform job tasks to meet or exceed customer key performance indicators and the minimum established performance metrics for the product.
  • Follows Instructions: Performs work according to SOP process steps and follows up on all verbal work assignments.
  • Accountability: The quality of this employees work is critical to the performance of the organization and customer satisfaction.
  • Read and count accurately, do simple math, write legibly.
  • Fire extinguisher Knowledge (know which extinguisher to use on certain fires), placard rules, loading capacities and compatibility, and storage arrangements for flammable and combustible liquids.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experienced with operating material handling equipment.
  • Demonstrate effective use of math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division.
  • Clear and effective verbal communications skills.
  • Follows instructions & completes work assignments on time.
  • Makes sound decisions and demonstrates thoughtfulness in the work performed.
  • Punctual and meet assigned time deadlines.
  • Ability to handle fluctuating work-load & work schedules.
  • Must cooperate with co-workers and leaders.
  • Willing to learn new tasks.
  • Maintains neat, clean, and organized work area including sanitation standards.
  • Accurately read, understand, apply, and record information on labels, products, receipts, picking tickets, cycle count forms, and bills of ladings.
  • Diligently follows process steps in all work performed utilizing Inland Star and customer SOP process steps.
  • Employee must be able to read small print to distinguish product and lot numbers, see areas where product is stored, and distinguish motorized equipment operating in the vicinity. Distinguish product labels and placards that are color coded. Use peripheral vision to scan racked area and use depth perception to accomplish bulk storage and retrieval.

 

 

Education, Skills & Experience

EDUCATION

  • 12th grade (High-School) or GED required

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • 2 -3 years in a warehouse setting preferred.
  • Stand-up and/or sit-down Forklift Operator experience required.
  • Ability to operate Order Pickers, Single, double and four-barrel clamps, slipper attachments carton and paper clamps preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid training/certified preferred

Work Environment:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat temperatures.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
