The Military Veteran Peer Network Coordinator (MVPN) is responsible for enhancing access to resources and services provided by Military Veteran Peer Network Peers. MVPN peers provide direct peer services to Service Members, Veterans, and their Families. The services include outreach to military veterans and families to develop trusted peer relationships. The relationships are built on shared life experiences. The experiences include developing skills useful in adapting to military affected trauma.  This position will collaborate with veteran services, organizations, and individuals to identify and expand services. This position is responsible for coordinating training, and peer volunteer recruitment, while also providing direction and support to MVPN Peer Volunteers. Works closely with community Veteran Service Officer (VSO), and other community stakeholders to develop and continue the mission of the Military Veteran Peer Network Program. Establishes protocols and processes for identifying veterans in need of assistance via the Jail Diversion program and through the outreach of MVPN.  Provides necessary training, support, and assistance to veterans, identifying and addressing needs in the appropriate level of service/care.  Facilitates peer support groups using approved curriculum.  Encourages and provides linkage to existing community services, including appropriate Mental Health services (Veteran Services, Clinic services, Trauma Informed Care services, Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorder services (COPSD), Peer Support, Family Partner, etc. Responsible for working with the MVPN Part-Time coordinator to meet the objective of the MVPN program. Collects required data in a manner consistent with program guidelines and contractual obligations. Attends meeting with community professionals/leadership, conducts/attends meeting with a professional demeanor and attire.  This position requires flexibility in schedule and some travel.  This position will follow the Statement of Work (SOW) through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) in coordination with the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC).


You will get to:

  • Build a peer network through Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) and works with county Veteran Service Officers (VSO) and other stakeholders.
  • Recruits prospective MVPN Peers to provide direct peer services to service members, veterans, and their families.
  • Coordinating training for MVPN Peer prospects and providing direct peer services to this population.
  • Collects and reports data about MVPN Peer Services Coordinator(s) and MVPN Peer activities and services and enters on the platform.
  • Attends monthly MVPN meetings.
  • Submits reports in a timely manner, monthly, quarterly, and yearly.
  • Provides direction and support to MVPN Peer volunteers.
  • Supervises the MVPN Part-Time Peer Coordinator.
  • Establish screening process within the county jails that will facilitate the identification of veterans that are incarcerated and may be suffering from mental health issues.
  • Assist incarcerated veterans and their dependents in establishing a safe/healthy support structure to reduce the chances of recidivism.  
  • Collaborate with Veteran Support Coordinators to assist consumers who are currently incarcerated.
  • Collaborate with Part-Time Veteran Peer Coordinator to determine potential candidates for VTC.
  • Serve as a qualified peer to peer support group facilitator using curriculum approved by DSHS, e.g., Seeking Safety and BEITZ (Basic everyone in the zone).
  • Address issues with individuals experiencing mental health and related stresses through group related, community-based intervention model of Seeking Safety
  • Collaborates and works cooperatively with intra-agency staff and inter-agency staff to link veterans and their families with outcome-focused services. 
  • Conduct approved outreach activities, by appointment, in a professional manner.
  • Encourage and provide linkage to existing community services, without duplicating those services.
  • Refer individuals to proper Mental Health services (Veteran Services, Regular Clinic, Trauma Informed Care, COPSD, Peer Support, Family Partners, etc.)
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Attend Veterans Court weekly in Comal County.
  • Coordinate with the local Mental Health First Aid Coordinator and post on platform training dates, 4 to be coordinated in a fiscal year.
  • Teach 2 AS+K and 2 CALM trainings in a fiscal year.
  • Travel as needed.
  • 16 Military Cultural Competency (MCC) training completed in a fiscal year.
  • Maintain productive team atmosphere to meet program goals.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor regarding schedule, stakeholder, outreach meetings, etc.
  • Follow all Hill Country MHDD policies and SOW.
  • Posting events, groups, training, and community effort up to date on the platform.
  • Ensure communication is made with SMVF peers, once a month, via the platform.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

You’ll definitely need:

  • High school diploma
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college
  • At least 30 hours’ course credit in Social, Behavioral or Human services is highly preferred.
  • Must be a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP)
  • Must have Military experience.
  • A valid Texas State Driver’s License.
  • Current automobile insurance and the ability to travel when necessary.

We’ll also want you to:

  • Provide targeted services to veterans and family members to including, but not limited to:  skills training, referrals, Seeking Safety and BEITZ, MCC trainings, AS+K, CALM, and Mental Health First Aide.
  • Attend Veteran’s court in Comal County weekly.
  • Adheres with any and all documentation requirements of funding sources or Hill Country administration.
  • Adhere to contractual obligations and provide valid and appropriate data and documentation.
  • Accountability for individual performance will be managed through weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports that are submitted to HHSC. 
  • Demonstrated ability to listen skillfully and collect relevant information. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Comfortable working with technology and can easily navigate new technology platforms.
  • Efficiently move through a to-do list and effectively prioritize and triage competing demands.
