Senior Director of Industrial Design

Delve is actively seeking a talented, driven and passionate Senior Director of Industrial Design (ID) to oversee our dynamic ID team across our multiple studios. You will have the opportunity to deliver excellence in Industrial Design to our clients, while supporting our ID team in developing solutions for what the world needs today and tomorrow.  Your focus will stretch across multiple industries within the medical device, consumer, and commercial product space.   At heart, you are a practitioner and want to remain connected to the design work, so you will play a key role in leading by example.   

This is a hybrid position in any of our studio locations- Boston, San Francisco, Madison or Philadelphia. We will begin reviewing applications on July 25, 2023.

Responsibilities 

• Expertly lead with a positive client-centric attitude. Drive high quality industrial design results on projects.

• Mentor and manage our ID staff to elevate our Industrial Design practice. Identify opportunities for growth for each of your team members and inspire them to advance professionally. 

• Serve as a day-to-day client contact for key multi-disciplinary projects.  

• Align work, planning, and influence with company goals and objectives and provide input to inform business analysis and planning.  

• Strategically plan and execute on departmental Initiatives aligned with company strategy.  

• Maintain relationships with clients and pursue relationships with prospective clients.  

• Identify hiring needs and make hiring decisions.  Maintain a cluster of effective contractors who can quickly expand the bandwidth of your team.  

• Support sales and marketing efforts and contribute to broader company-related initiatives, strategies, and communications. 

• Serve as a thought leader to the department, company, and our clients. Promote new ideas, methods, technologies, and solutions.  

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience working within Design

• 8+ years of management experience

• 5+ years of recent consulting experience.

• Master's or Bachelor’s degree in Design (Industrial Design, or equivalent areas)

• Strong user-centered design process experience

• Strong problem-solving skills and bias for action

• Willing to travel for project and client engagement up to 20% of the time.

• As a Design leader you have a strong point of view about Design, you know how Industrial Design connects to other Design disciplines in the context of User Experience Design and Digital Design. You understand Design Strategy and Design Research and can effectively collaborate across the spectrum of our practices from Strategy through Design and Engineering.

• You have an ability to sell your ideas, yourself, your team and services in a way that is natural, engaging and effortlessly integrates the language of design.

• You have a credible and nuanced communication style that integrates design and business acumen in a steady and defensible manner, commands a room, inspires and ultimately makes clients and teammates feel confident in you as a leader.

• You are a talented and capable industrial designer whose skills are highly respected, enabling you to challenge a team of industrial designers, and energize and inspire them to step up their game. Preferably, you have experience or exposure to designing combined physical and digital products and interactions.

• You have a passion for design and live and breathe it, searching for, evaluating and discussing the design of everyday things. While you appreciate work-life balance, your passion for design keeps you consistently curious and involved in design, the design community and other initiatives both in and outside of work.

• Your leadership style is naturally one of mentoring. You are hands on, genuine, adaptable and balance perfectionism with allowing people to learn from mistakes. You enjoy delegating and providing people with the proper level of responsibility to help them grow. While you are a natural leader, you constantly seek input and adapt your plans based on the goals of individuals and the broader organization.
