Description

Slipstream is seeking a passionate individual with a building energy policy or technical background that wants to apply their knowledge and experience to build a stronger foundation for building energy codes in the Midwest.

 

This Senior Building Codes Policy Advisor position is part of our Policy Team where we inform public policy development with Slipstream’s technical knowledge and analysis. The Senior Building Codes Policy Advisor will work closely with team members to support development, advancement, and compliance of advanced building policies in Midwest states. This individual will play a key role in collaboration with external policymaking bodies and will apply policy making, research and analysis skills to provide needed to improve compliance with building energy codes. The role requires excellent communication skills to distill and convey complicated topics to a variety of audiences.

Our physical offices are in Madison, WI and Chicago, IL and preference will be given to candidates located in those areas or those who would work remotely within driving distance to Wisconsin.  Midwest candidates can expect to make between $90,000 and $110,000.  Candidates from high cost of living cities (Chicago, IL) can expect to make between $100,000 and 115,000.

Qualifications

What you’ll do:

  • Complete policy analysis that addresses impacts on construction starts, workforce, specific economic sectors, housing costs, and more to inform energy code development processes
  • Provide policy expertise related to local, state, and national building code trends and objectives
  • Directly engage stakeholders and the public, with the goal of providing transparency in the code development process
  • Lead and conduct primary and secondary research on residential and commercial building advanced building policies, including impacts, funding sources, and utility attribution models
  • Monitor local, state, and federal regulation and legislation and development of building code policy
  • Identify funding opportunities and lead proposal development to secure funding for Slipstream’s advanced building research and policy interventions
  • Work with principal investigators, technical leads, and other internal and external parties to make sure overall project objectives are met, and projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Play the role of subject matter expert and work collaboratively across Slipstream
  • Communicate clearly through reports and presentations

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in policy, architecture, engineering, urban planning, environmental or sustainability studies, energy analysis, or related field
  • Ten years in a policy, codes, or energy related position
  • Experience with data compilation, quantitative methods, and applying research methods
  • Experience with energy codes and advanced building policies preferred
  • Ability to manage projects both independently and alongside team members; maintain organization among complexity
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse group of energy stakeholders including researchers and technical personnel, government entities, utilities, building occupants, community members, and developers and contractors
  • Natural curiosity and interest in learning about new approaches and creative ideas
  • Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to clearly convey complex concepts, ideas, and solutions
