Our Computing, Design, & Fabrication(CD&F) Department comprises talented professionals committed to instructing and engaging students. ABOUT THE POSITION

Gann Academy seeks candidates for a full-time, in-person position for the 2024-2025 school year teaching Engineering.

 

The courses offered in the CD&F Department are technical and creative design skills alongside collaborative practice. The curriculum of the department pursues four disciplines in depth: design thinking, mechanical engineering, computer science, and robotics; we seek opportunities for interdisciplinary overlap both within and across departments. We strive to provide both a breadth of possibilities to all students and a depth of study for our most advanced students. The new Engineering teacher will collaborate with the department to develop an exciting, accessible, deep curriculum within our core disciplines. They will also work with faculty in other departments to identify and create opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Gann’s state-of-the-art Prototyping, Fabrication, and Robotics Labs are resources for many students and learning across the school. Successful candidates for this position will be innovative thinkers with deep knowledge in multiple disciplines within engineering and an interest in and commitment to creating meaningful, safe, and challenging educational experiences for high school students.

 

Successful candidates will have a passion for engineering, a strong background in classroom teaching, curriculum design and pedagogy skills, and a commitment to collaborating, reflecting, and growing in their teaching practice. Personal qualities such as creativity, curiosity, perseverance, and flexibility are desirable, as are practical communication skills with students and families.

 

This in-person, full-time position starts in August 2024 and will report to the Director of STEAM. The salary range is between $55,000 and $90,000 annually, commensurate with relevant work experience and qualifications.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Teaching Duties

  • Teach Engineering 1, Engineering 2, and Senior Capstone Project.
  • Teach a Foundations Class for 9th Graders new to engineering and the innovation lab spaces
  • Help promote the engineering program inside the building and the wider Gann community.
  • Maintain lab spaces, responsible for supplies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan and adapt curriculum and lessons supporting student growth in engineering and interdisciplinary work.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in engineering initiatives.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students, parents, and colleagues in person and via email.
  • Upkeep/fixing/troubleshooting power tools and 3D printers

 

Community Involvement & Engagement

  • Attend and participate in communal programs outside the classroom during school hours; model and encourage appropriate behavior; and monitor students during events and programming.
  • Attend and participate in open houses, graduation, and other special events which may take place in the evenings and weekends.

 

Collaborative Responsibilities

  • Work with students outside of the classroom as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings; collaborate with department members and instructional director on curriculum development, lesson planning, student issues, and department initiatives.
  • Assist colleagues with substitution when able; arrange and communicate class coverage as needed.

 

Professional Development, Growth, and Training

  • Attend and participate in all faculty/staff work-day programs, in-service training (including August and June in-service days), orientation programs, seminars, and safety training/drills.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities in or out of school; display willingness and ability to grow, learn, and practice self-reflection; work with the instructional director and other faculty and administration members on educational and pedagogical growth and innovative tools and techniques in and out of the classroom.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering is required; a master’s degree is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A commitment to student-centered, mastery-based teaching
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft suite applications and other web-based educational tools/apps
  • Must be proficient in English to carry out work as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands include dexterity in operating office machines and supplies, including—but not limited to—computers, telephones, electronic calculators, copy machines, and printers. Lifting heavy machinery and carrying wood and other supplies around the lab are also common. Stooping, bending, reaching for files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods are also common.
