Position Overview

The Graduate Assistant (GA) is an 11 hour per week graduate assistantship. The primary responsibilities of the GA are largely based on the specific duties from a college or division. The position will apply theory to practice for the specific office area in which the position is housed. The assistantship shall be for the academic semester, with the opportunity to continue for the following academic year if agreeable to the supervisor and the GA. GA positions are academic and should include significant mentoring and professional development. GA should be considered part-time professionals in the field and given projects reflective of that role. Individuals may not hold other employment on campus without prior permission from college or division.

 

Hours per Week

11 hrs/wk with some flexibility due to programming/events.

 

College/Department Overview

Project Speak Up is a federally funded grant awarded to the University of Central Center for Counseling and Well-Being by the Office on Violence Against Women. The purpose of the grant on campus is to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking to create a more safe and inclusive community. The grant will allow UCO to expand advocacy and violence prevention efforts.

 

Department Specific Job Functions

Under the direction and supervision of the Health Promotion Assistant Director, the Graduate Student has the responsibility of working to mobilize, create and sustain campus-wide health promotion practices in order to create an environment that promotes student success and personal development. The Graduate Student will work with the Project Speak UP coordinator, and student volunteers on campus interpersonal violence prevention initiatives including, but not limited to, stalking, bullying, domestic violence, and sexual assault. These initiatives could include educational programming, special events, marketing, social media campaigns, and more.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning, implementation and evaluation of theory-based and evidence-informed health promotion strategies, polices, programs and services.
  • Assist in planning, implementation, and coordination of outreach education programs for various academic classes and the campus community.
  • Incorporate multicultural diversity and social justice concepts and principles into violence prevention services.
  • Facilitate Peer Health Leaders in the delivery of Project Speak Up programs, outreach education programs and special events on and off campus.
  • Utilize and manage UCORE to track PHL service hours, programs and events, and evaluations.
  • Utilize SignUpGenius to create signups for Project Speak Up programming and presentations.
  • Seek out opportunities to work collaboratively with student organizations and other departments to create, publicize, and deliver Project Speak Up or events.
  • Be an active member of the UCO Healthy Campus Leadership Team on behalf of the grant.
  • Conduct outreach education for the campus community.
  • Assist in planning, implementation, and evaluation of interpersonal violence prevention programs.
  • of marketing and promotion for health promotion programs and special events.
  • Coordinate and oversee groups of health promotion volunteers that include but are not limited to planning meets, professional development, and sign ups.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Attend staff meetings and trainings hosted by the Center for Counseling & Well-Being.
  • Attend required Peer Health Leader meetings and trainings.
  • Evening/Weekend work as needed.

 

Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half-time enrollment for fall/spring semesters is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible to work as a student employee. Full-time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester: Student employees working regular student positions must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in fall classes in order to work during the summer, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes. Student employees working FWSP positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (if undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (if graduate) in order to work during the summer in a Federal Work Study Program position.

Enrollment Exception: If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required for student employment, the student must obtain a letter from their Academic Advisor (stating the number of hours needed to graduate and anticipated graduation date) and submit it to Human Resources. Qualifications/Experience Preferred

  • Demonstrated knowledge of health promotion, behavior change, and population-based theories and models, interpersonal violence related topics and issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-informed violence prevention programs/initiatives.
  • Demonstrated skills in a variety of educational methods including presentations, workshops, trainings and small group discussion/facilitation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with college students.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience mentoring young adults and adults.
  • Flexible schedule, ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • The Graduate Student should be open to various cultures, practices, and orientations and display sensitivity to controversial topics.
