Essential Duties and Responsibilities

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Marketing Communications team creates and implements strategies to position Girl Scouts as the premier leadership organization for girls in the 18-county region served by Girl Scouts Heart of Central California (GSHCC). The team creates and implements GSHCCs marketing communications plans designed to retain and recruit members; promote the councils programs in a way that increases awareness and utilization of those programs and services; and foster a positive image of Girl Scouts with the media, public, funders, and other key stakeholders.

 

  • Create, implement and manage an annual, multi-channel strategic communications plan, working in close collaboration with council colleagues, directors and leadership in alignment with council priorities and objectives.
  • Develop and manage council-wide communications content calendar supporting programs, events, campaigns and activities.
  • Create, manage and develop content for internal communications to keep staff apprised of current campaigns, priorities and events.
  • Write content that is clear, concise, and appropriate for multiple channels (website, email, print collateral, social media, podcast, video, and media) and multiple target audiences (girl members, troop leaders, volunteers, non-members, and the public) aligned to GSHCC mission and initiatives.
  • Write, edit, and proofread copy for GSHCCs Annual Report, Camp Brochure, guidebooks, user manuals, event scripts and speeches, and other materials.
  • Edit and proofread public-facing department-created written materials to ensure consistency of messaging according to the GSUSA editorial style guidelines.
  • Create and implement GSHCC crisis communications as needed.
  • Work closely with the CEO to create relevant and content-specific communications messages for our members and the general public.
  • Support the GSHCC Media Star program, including recruiting new members, training members to handle media interviews, provide unique media-related experiences for members.
  • Implement strategies that mobilize girls, volunteers, and parents to share their stories.
  • Responsible for creating and managing digital marketing communication strategies to increase participation in GSHCC programs and services, increase membership, and enhance the organizations brand.
  • Oversee the organizations digital platforms content, functionality, and ease of use.
  • Support the Digital Marketing Specialist to ensure GSHCCs website content is SEO optimized, engages external audiences, and is in compliance with GSUSA standards.
  • Manage all GSHCC social media pages to increase engagement and bilateral communication on these platforms.
  • Support the councils public and media relations strategies and initiatives by writing press releases, sharing digital news and social posts created by troops and Service Units, and encouraging our members to share their stories or achievements.
  • Support all Marketing Communications team members as needed.
  • Serve as one of GSHCCs key brand champions to maintain and enforce GSUSAs and GSHCCs style guidelines, including creating digital assets such as videos, photos, and images.

  • Produce communications and materials that meet GSHCCs standards, successfully convey the message, and that are consistent with the GSUSA brand
  • Project manage deliverables, ensuring high quality work in a timely manner
Experience, Skills and Qualifications

Technical skillset: This position requires training in several systems. You will receive training and must be comfortable with using the following:

  • Girl Scouts Volunteer Systems (SalesForce 2.0)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams
  • Digital media: video posting/editing, social media posting/editing, email marketing platforms (SalesForce Marketing Cloud)
  • Zoom, GoToMeeting, Looker, gsLearn, gsConnect,
  • Adobe Experience Manager (web editor), Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite
  • Asana (project management)
  • Rallyhood (internal member portal)

 

SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Marketing or a related field required
  • At least five years of experience writing communications intended to promote programs or services
  • Strong, editing, proofreading, and writing skills using the Chicago Manual of Style. Ability to write for a variety of audiences and for multiple channels including website, email, social media, and printed collateral
  • Experience with website management and functionality, and writing for the web; experience with social media functionality.
  • Ability to project manage campaigns and deliverables from staff and contractors according to deadlines.
  • Experience with Asana or other project management systems preferred.
  • Able to steward, grow and protect the Girl Scout brand.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively with others and cultivate and manage relationships to succeed in common goals.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Demonstrate a commitment to recognize and respect the many forms of diversity
  • Demonstrate a willingness to embrace the Girl Scouts mission, goals, values, and council-driven programs
  • Valid California drivers license, a clean driving record, and proof of insurance
  • Available for council-required events throughout the year
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination, unless a qualifying medical or religious exemption is needed

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to lift and carry 25 pounds.

 

WORK HOURS/TRAVEL

  • Must have access to reliable transportation; position may include some work-related travel.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel, including some overnight travel as needed (approximately 3 times per year).
