Position: Bus Driver

Classification: Part-time, Non-exempt (schedule will vary based on event scheduling)

Pay Rates: $20 per hour drive time and $8 per hour on-call wait time

Primary Reporting Relationship: Fleet Coordinator

Secondary Reporting Relationship: Operations Director

Direct Reports: None

Ministry Area: Operations, School

Interfaces: Staff, students, and volunteers of Bay Area Church, Bay Area Christian School, and the Early Learning Academy at Bay Area Christian School; other stakeholders as identified and appropriate

Job Purpose: Bus Drivers will provide safe, orderly, and efficient transportation to and from school and church activities. Drivers will be issued a framework of standard policies and procedures that must be followed, ensuring the safety of passengers is maintained at all times before, during, and after operating the assigned vehicle. Bus Drivers will perform their duties and responsibilities in support of Bay Area Churchs vision to saturate the 4B Area with the gospel by restoring people, families, and churches.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Transport stakeholders to and from school and church activities, which may include: athletic events, field trips, competitions, conferences, mission trips, and various retreats

  • Follow the event transportation schedule as closely as possible, accounting for planned and unplanned stops

  • Maintain a clean and mechanically-sound vehicle at all times to ensure safe operating conditions

  • Conduct safety and operational inspections of assigned vehicle before and after each trip

  • Prioritize safety of passengers, staying apprised of and adapting to any inclement traffic and/or weather conditions throughout the duration of the trip

  • Assist passengers with getting on and off the vehicle, plus loading and unloading equipment, as needed

  • Report any observed mechanical repairs needed

  • Ensure the assigned vehicle has adequate gas, diesel fuel, oil, battery charge, fluids, tire air pressure, etc. throughout the duration of the trip and service the vehicle as necessary

  • Obey safety and traffic laws at all times

  • Attend all required orientations, trainings, and safety meetings, as assigned

  • Assist the Fleet Coordinator with interior and exterior cleaning and vehicle maintenance, as needed

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Texas Commercial drivers license (CDL) with passenger endorsement required

  • Ability to maintain valid CDL certification according to state regulations

  • Must be at least 21 years of age for consideration

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

  • Knowledge of safe driving practices required

  • Clean driving record required: no at-fault traffic accidents or traffic citations within the last five years

  • Willingness to submit to a detailed background check, MVR, and drug screening upon hire and throughout tenure of employment, as requested

Skills and Abilities:

  • Previous experience driving a school bus preferred

  • Previous experience working with children preferred

  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary to successfully perform the required duties

  • Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties

  • Ability to establish and maintain friendly, effective, customer-service-driven working relationships with all stakeholders in the performance of required duties

  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress

  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal)

  • Ability to evacuate students in the event of an accident or emergency

  • Ability to work around high noise levels and with frequent interruptions

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is rated for light work and requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and walking. The employee in this position will be required to use fingers and hands to work, including grasping and repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The employee in this position will need to lift and/or move items, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Specific vision abilities required by this job include visual acuity required to safely operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.

Environmental Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, typically with some protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. The employee may be subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions such as: proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat, and exposure to chemicals. The employee is subject to noise sufficient to cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level. The employee is subject to vibration, including exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
